it's bizarre to me how any paysite could use that piece of shit. Windows Media has it all over Real Media. A 256kbps stream in RM looks like a 100kbps Windows Media stream. And you're right about the buffering, sometimes it just fucking hangs forever, like it forgot what it's suppposed to be doing.
Plus the best thing about Windows Media files is they start streaming as you download them like an MPEG does, with a fast enough connection you don't even need to have a media server. Quicktime probably has the best video quality of them all but for some reason when you blow up a Quicktime movie to full screen it deteriorates much worse than a Windows Media movie. I still can't figure out why MPEG is liked more than Windows Media format. MPEGs are bigger and I don't see the quality being much better. So why MPEG? I could see it if at equal file sizes MPEG looked better but my eyes don't see that.

Most of the complaints I hear about Real Player are an older version. Download the latest... it rocks.
For some sites, real media is the best choice. If you just have 45 second stroke clips mpeg looks best. .wmv and .rm both look like shit by comparison. But if you have a 5 minute clip, Real Media is the only one I ever could get an an acceptable resolution and size. At larger resolutions, it blows away windows media for any given filesize - it yields a more acceptable movie. I have never had a single customer complain about Real Media. The latest version is a quick free download and runs on any platform. |

Yeah I love the newest version of Real Player. Its called "Real One" or someshit. It's nice, I always use it to watch my race highlights on nascar.com, news on cnn.com and court shit on courttv.com

i have a fairly recent version of Real Player. It sucks.
And MPEG just cuz it's MPEG doesn't make it better, like a JPEG you can compress the shit out of it and it looks like shit. Same thing with Windows Media of course but if you get me the same two movies, produce an MPEG and a WMV file of the same size, you won't be able to tell which is the supposedly superior MPEG.

but, tgp/mgp webmasters seem to prefer mpeg way over wmv. And it seems as if wmv is more likely to cause _whatsoever_ headaches even on MS systems. But overall wmv kicks ass. |

the files play, but anytime you fast forward or want to move around the movie you have to wait 5-10 seconds for it to rebuffer and start playing where you want. just a pain in the ass, wish sites wouldn't use this format for paying customers. |

There are lots of sites which do not stream any kind of media files well, right click, save as, then play it from your hd.
I review tons of movie galleries, and at least 25% of the galleries need to be saved to my hd to play the movies, it doesn't matter, mpeg, avi, wmv, real whatever, it's just the server or traffic on the network |

Real One is sooooo fucking bloated. I just wanna be able to play .rm files, I don't want sports channels, spam mail, or the fucking thing taking over my DVD player, MP3 files and anything else it can get its grubby little hands on.

Most sites that use Real (me too) just make them downloadable in the members section. You can view them or save them. I was speaking about the media in general, not the streaming server. I never tried that one myself. |
