Here we go again - school shooting in Colorado

Seems there is another school shooting, this time in Colorado. Two students hurt, and police are calling it an "active shooter situation".

Another mentally disturbed young male wanting to commit suicide and at the same time be an attention whore. There really is no way to stop a kamikaze type crime. Not caring if you die really makes a crime impossible to stop.

"this time in Colorado" -- this time? Seems like there's something strange in the water down that way, this is like the 3rd one I've heard about there.

Let me guess, it's the gun's fault?

All the media attention has made it the "in" thing to do for the maladjusted crowd

Just look at all the "news" outlets, it's the Story Of The Day, for some outlets it will be the only news story they cover today. The shooter's name will live on for years.

Can you see how that might seem attractive to some angst-ridden teen who feels he's been bullied and ignored by turns for his entire life?

These things have always happened from time to time but it was very rare and we never heard much about it, but after Columbine it became The Big Story for the media and I think that it's the increased coverage that's driving the increase in incidents.

I had guns when I was in high school but the idea of taking a gun to school and shooting somebody then myself would never have even occurred to me, I'd never heard of anybody doing something like that before, now everybody's heard of it and it seems there are some think it's a good idea.

Just my

There isn't much you can do to stop this kind of a shooting. Anyone with a firearm can walk into a school, church, movies, mall and do massive amounts of damage.

I know, I could walk into my local police station and empty a clip or two. All it takes is a death wish.

That's the problem with this new generation with their fancy social media...everyone wants attention 24 hours a day. In my day, we were private and had a few close friends. In fact, privacy was actually VALUED - imagine that! Kids today have no real friends only "facebook friends".

SO the unstable ones need to go out big and they do that by taking out a few others with them.

I disagree with "kids today have no real friends, only facebook friends". My kid is big on social networking, Instagram and snapchat, kix, etc, but all of the people she communicates with are people she knows.

Something has changed with kids somewhere along the line. Where I grew up all of us were hunters, and had quick access to rifles, etc. We never even thought of bringing a firearm to school.

On another message board (a non adult one) someone said "We need to restrict access to firearms" and someone quick replied "Why punish responsible firearm owners?". If you are a responsible firearm owner, then your kid wouldn't have access to them.

It's not "stupid kids" - it's firearm owners who don't prevent others from taking their firearms and using them for crimes.

Being a responsible gun owner does not mean keeping them locked up from your kids it means not raising your kids to be fucktards. When I was growing up everyone I knew had access to their parents guns. Every house in our neighborhood had a closet full of guns and the ammo was not locked up either. I never heard of anyone getting hurt from a gun and of course nobody used a gun for crime either.

These kids who commit these shootings are mentally ill from all the garbage they watch on TV and movies and all the garbage they consume into their bodies.

By the time i was 5 or 6 years old I cold have taken out a semi auto .22 rifle whenever I felt like it. Did I? No of course I did not without the supervision of my father because he would have taken me outside and beat my ass with a stick.

so it is ok to watch and eat all these things

as long as your parents are beating your ass to the ground with a weapon?

You might have nailed it perfectly.

Kids these days watch movies with massive amounts of violence while when I was a kid I wasn't allowed to listen to Madonna because of her "Like a virgin" album and I wasn't allowed to watch Saturday Night Fever.

At the same time, I had unlimited access to firearms and could pull them out at any time. But I never once thought of it because my father would have beat me with his thick leather belt.

When exactly was your day? School shooting are as American as Apple pie. The first recorded was in the 1760's...

There have been literally hundreds of school shootings and most of them happened well before 24 hour news stations and even before the 90's. This isn't a new problem and it matters little how much new coverage there is..

History of school shootings in the US. The list was so long, I couldn't post it here.. So this is the link..

These.

Media and social media (and those who own it) are the real culprits. White kids going apeshit and killing each other is their idea of natural selection.

300,000,000 plus humans in the US, a defective one does something tragically stupid every few months and we want to make laws, change policy, restrict freedoms, point fingers, etc. We should feel lucky this doesn't happen all the time.

As for guns, quit imagining/fantasizing there's a delete button to make them go away.

I'm not imagining anything.. Why is it, because someone has a different opinion than you about guns, you instantly think they are anti gun?

so lets ban tv and all this will go away?...bullshit! there were a lot of violent tv shows in the 60's. heck, even charles manson's "family" said they grew up with violence all around them especially on tv naming shows like gunsmoke, have gun will travel, etc. also i am tired of people saying kids need to be beat more to stay in line. stats show kids who are victims of such violence are far more likely to commit violent acts themselves. just because it may have made you more subdued doesn't mean it does for everyone.

i don't think there is one pinpoint but i'd say kids being over medicated along with the breakdown of community are a couple of them. no one knows their neighbors anymore, no one cares about their neighbors anymore. life is so much more anonymous but online everyone knows everything about everyone else if they choose to share it. you can blame news media to some degree, news is so immediate and constant and everyone hangs on its last word but that is really society's fault itself rather than the media. they are just giving what people eat up. we are all monsters of our own creation.

Using that link I posted, there were 16 school shootings from 1960-1969. Ironically in the 1950s there was 21 school related shootings. They didn't have first person shooters in the 50s or 60s or Facebook and what ever other media people want to blame.

These shootings are nothing new, we just hear more about them, but it doesn't mean that is their cause. If you read through some of the shootings on that list from 20,50 or even 150 years ago they have some of the same reasons as the kids doing it today.

Exactly.

Also, I head the other day, which we all know is that gun ownership is at an all time high.

This might be Violent Crime as well, for 2013.
I only caught part of the news on it, and numbers of course wont be out till next year.

Guns are a god-send, you have to aim, be fairly coordinated, able to reload, can only target one person at a time, can be interrupted while shooting. Terrorists don't use them, they use homemade explosives. Guns weren't used in Boston were they?

Watch what happens when these high school losers start being creative.

i don't think there is one pinpoint but i'd say kids being over medicated along with the breakdown of community are a couple of them. no one knows their neighbors anymore, no one cares about their neighbors anymore. life is so much more anonymous but online everyone knows everything about everyone else if they choose to share it. you can blame news media to some degree, news is so immediate and constant and everyone hangs on its last word but that is really society's fault itself rather than the media. they are just giving what people eat up. we are all monsters of our own creation.

yeah I agree 100% with the over medicated comment.

think about that

These shootings are nothing new, we just hear more about them, but it doesn't mean that is their cause. If you read through some of the shootings on that list from 20,50 or even 150 years ago they have some of the same reasons as the kids doing it today.
It's noticeable that the massacres happened recently, in the mass media age.

Most of those older ones look like Wild West style grudges.

This might be Violent Crime as well, for 2013.
I only caught part of the news on it, and numbers of course wont be out till next year.

The really funny thing is some people that think violent crime has dropped because gun ownership has risen. Violent crime is down, but gun ownership is also down too. What is that tell you?

You are VERY wrong if you think gun ownership has dropped. Since Obama took office, gun checks, permits, AND Sales have hit record highs.
Step outside the internet my friend.

The first link is based on people being asked if they have a gun in their home... LOL

I told them NO also... I wanted to say GFY....

"A general decline in hunting and a decrease in violent crime over the years have made owning guns much less of a priority for many Americans"

While the pool asked was Small ........

So if they are not in the homes of the people that bought them..... Criminals have them??

HA..

Anyway I was beating the other side of the Drum since NRA and everything was mentioned about this Story, when it was a SHOT GUN and 2 Fuel Bombs. (only one was set off)

Bottom Line.. Americans DO need to teach better gun Safety, and the USA needs to help identify problem children / adults.

Hmm.Well let's ponder that one.

In the UK, people don't walk into schools, churches, movies or malls and do massive amounts of damage, except in very rare and unusual cases (Hungerford). However, in America it happens once a month or so.

Guns are banned here, and encouraged in the US.

Nope, not much you can do to stop that kind of shooting.

Parents should be more attentive to their kids.
Depression is the key to all these violence happening in schools.
When children are sad and depress they tend to hurt others.

Same here in Australia. We had loads of guns, then after a couple of shootings and then Port Arthur happened... guns were banned. Oh look, no fucking shootings. Amazing. There is SO MUCH EVIDENCE from around the world that the countries with the least access to guns have the lowest instances of gun crimes and gun deaths. But y'all would rather stick your heads in the sand.
The only actual number my quick google search came up with (lots of sites doing ratios with other things, per centages and per capitas) was 11,364 gun deaths in the US in 2013. That's nearly four times the number of people that died in 9/11, which you went to war for. And dragged half the Western World with you.
But you have rights, right?
