We don't have a doorman, but have a staff of 3 building manager/maintenance people. I give each $50 and a bottle of wine usually.

I once lived in a gated community and there was a security guard at the gate 24/7. I gave all of the security guys a C note around Xmas...which actually cost me $500.00-$600.00...because they had extras to keep the gate manned 24/7.

that's not how it works around here with doormen. you tip them directly, they put it in their pocket.

i like it this way better, i am also basing it on performance. 1 of my doormen always makes a chippie comment when he opens the door, like "that'll be $2, hehheh." i don't need that kind of crud every time i walk into my residence.

What type of building do you live in that has a doorman?

I was a doorman in a condo building in NYC for a brief time in 1992, it bored the crap out of me so I went back to my service advisor job. But if I stayed there 4 doormen and they avg 15k each for xmas. The building had 150 units if memory served me right.

Since I have no doorman, and there is only 3 staff members, I just go with all 3. Plus the manager does a lot of arranging of packages that arrive when I am gone etc. Most of the residents do the same, so it might just be the building custom, not really sure.

According to this guide, between $25 - $150 per NYC doormen, depending on a variety of factors.

talk about a completely superfluous profession. Is it so hard to open the door yourself? I would feel uncomfortable if a guy was opening doors for me every day.

thanks peeps!

ftr, several of y'all have a hollywood image of a doorman. it's not luxury, it's security and for the overall day to day operation of a building.

a doorman at modern live or work facility runs the entry area, delivery people comiing and going, making sure guests show id and sign in, etc.

he's not standing out in the rain waiting to greet me when my driver opens the door of my maybach.

We only had one, he was there during the day. It was in Barcelona, so no real need for one. But was nice to have someone open the door, tell you people had called, give you your posts/parcels etc.

Houses are great.

And then you get to put on a new roof, replace the furnace and central AC, replace old wiring/plumbing, re-build a sagging roof over the back deck, pave the driveway, replace the 50-yr-old windows with new triple-pane thermals, overhaul the 1970s bathrooms, replace the aged kitchen cabinetry, update the lighting fixtures, new garage door opener, mow the lawn weekly, tend the gardens, pool maintenance...

Our house is 128 yrs. old this year.

I love a fix 'n repair place. Gives a feeling of accomplishment.

And exhaustion.

Yea I wish I never bought this fucking house... it's lost at least $150K in value since I bought it and there seems to be an endless list of things that has to be done ><

Chose my new place just a little bit outside of downtown, did look at a few downtown so guess I lost killer view, sundeck and a doorman, outside of downtown little cheaper, less congestion and more parking. Think I would tip based on how cool the dude was. Some people just do their jobs and others go above and beyond.
