Is this racist?

<img src=http://www3.sleazydream.com/banners/cig.jpg>

is this racist?
it's a Ronson touch tip cig lighter in near mint condition.

Curious as to your thoughts... it's from the 1930s - a valueable cig lighter (i collect them) - this one is worth several thousand dollars. I bought it cause I got it WAY under market value and it's a famous lighter in cig collectors circles.

Blackface is for the most part considered racist.

But that's pretty cool, I'm sure it is worth a few bucks. I like old stuff like that.

I think the racism would be 'in the spirit' in which it was collected...

if you were some derranged psycho nazi kkk dude that secretly wacks off to blacksonblondes, then yes I'd think it'd be racist...

but if you're a serious collector and appreciate it for it's historical value, etc ... my vote would go for 'no' on the racist issue...

are currators of historical artifacts from WWII racist?

I went to high school with a guy who was racist. He was a total geek, a math, physics, chemistry, typing, computer lab nerd who was as smart as a whip.... but utterly completely descriminatory to black people. He would no more own such a collectible or have such a thing in his home as he would kill his own sister. I'm sure he would use it for target practise or something though.

You buying, owning, and cherishing such an item and displaying it in your home shows just the opposite of racism I would think.

Awesome, sounds like a bitchen collection...

I like old stuff too... but I got a boring 'standard' collection fetish....coins...

I don't know why really, I just like them...

probably started when I inherited a shitload of old coins from my great grandmother from all over the world when I was a kid....

neat shit, one of these days I need to get them appraised...but I'm not really in it for the $$, I just like looking at them sometimes...wonder where they've been, who's handled them, who made them, etc...

how much porn someone could buy with them back in the day...shit like that HAHA

LOL, ok, that was taken way too seriously

I'm kinda tired and tried to throw out some example of some possibly odd racist behavior...

didn't intend for that to become a focal point of discussion LOL

There is a hint of racist ridicule in this type of art, that doesn't go unnoticed. My personal feeling: the movement of this type of art was in itself racist but individual artists probably were motivated by cold winters and high bills and took advantage of the movement.

In any case they are collecter pieces but surely they highlight the ignorance of the times.

here's a thought on old coins.

you can buy roman coins on ebay that date back 2000 years.

now think about this - the population of that time wasnt' huge - maybe a million or two in the medetraiian area. - narrow that to coins bought in Isreal and it's much lower population.

Ok - that being said there and knowing that Jesus traveled the land and talk to and phycially TOUCHED thousands of people there is a VERY good chance that the person who touched that roman coin Touched JESUS CHRIST in person - and almost a certainty that a person who touched that coin touched someone who touched JESUS Christ in person.

I'm not a JEsus nut, but one cannot deny that Jesus is one of the most influential huans that ever lived.

You pretty much summed up the exact reason why I love old coins.

I'm sure a very similar allure goes with the ligher collections. Who made them? Who used them? What were the times and location like where it traveled....

I remember back in school I never thought myself much of a history fan, until I recently discovered how much I enjoy odd things like this and of course my occasional binges of the history channel when they have some good segments on.

Interesting thread. It coincided with a discussion in tonight's episode of the Tavis Smiley radio show on NPR. Dr. Earl Ofari Hutchinson and a rep from Ebay were discussing whether it was racist to use the "N" word to describe memorabilia from the 30's and 40's.

My personal take is that if there are other ways to describe a memorabilia other than the N word then the other more nonoffensive should be used. However, if the N Word is the ACTUAL name/title of the item then use it -- for accuracy's / identification's sake. For example, Randall Kennedy's book on the history of the N word uses the N word as its title. In this example, it makes sense to list the item with the N keyword.

Just my

I really don't think you can compare a WWII artifact to a big-lipped coal-black bartending caricature.

How about a nazi dhahahahation of jews having large noses?

They did put out books describing the physical characteristics of the jews and gypsies for the population to be able to identify this 'scourge' on their society...

I'd think that'd be a bit on the racist side...

there is MORE racism in the world than pure black/white imo...

racism is an equal opportunity offender....
