Is Technology Becoming Creepy?

You call somewhere - an airline, a store, wherever - and the person on the other end of the phone knows it's you, your name, address, flight plans, recent purchases, preferences.....and they talk to you like they KNOW you! "Oh Hello Mark, I see you're leaving on such and such a date...."

Fucking creepy!

No more giving your name, number, basic info to some phone jockey on the other end of the line. Oh no! NOW they know YOU - who you are, where you're calling from, even your fucking location (at a bar, on a street corner, at home, wherever). Yet no one seems to complain but rather people seem to like the "convenience" of not having to give out all that personal info verbally.

Fucking nuts.

I think it's great. I go into to get a haircut and they know the exact details of every haircut I've ever had. Same thing when I order Pizza.

The other day I had to set up an account with UPS and they asked me a number of questions so they could identify me. They knew every street I've ever lived in in the past twenty-five years. We are worried about what the NSA is doing, but that's nothing compared to the data UPS and Fed Ex has on you...

I know, right? One time some company asked me to verify something and started asking me about old street addresses to places I had lived and totally forgotten about! "Oh yeah, I lived there twenty years ago....." LOL Weird.

That's really weird, unless you're talking about a credit card company calling to verify that you are actually taking a trip with those airline tickets you bought. In that case, it's pretty normal.

I agree - it's going to get a lot worse. I see the day when you walk into a gas station and the clerk knows your name and everything about you before you hit the counter because you are carrying some chip.

On the bright side, I love my new Jeep. I put the key in my pocket, when I walk away it locks itself, when I walk up it unlocks, no need to take out a key, just push a button.

Fucking nuts.

The only technology that really had much to do with your example was caller ID, which has been around since what, early 90's? Sure they have your information in a database to speed up the process, but even then, that was happening in the 90's too. Are you telling me you are two decades behind on technology?

It's pretty simple to look at your phone number/name on the caller id then get out your file and know exactly what we talked about last time or when you last visited, etc, etc.

I'm not sure why you're bringing this up in 2013... are you high?

I'm curious about that. How far away are you when it locks, or is it right when you shut your door? It seems to me that if weren't immediate when you shut your door, someone COULD be waiting on the other side of your rear door and crack that open after yours shuts, while you walk away unbeknownst that someone is now in your car or made off with it's contents, because you are under the assumption that your car locks itself.

No, it's more than just caller ID dude. They know ALL the info about you in this "database" you mentioned. They didn't automatically know your info back then, they had to look it up, and I'm talking about "Hello Mark, you did x,y and z and you're calling about a,b,c and d...."

It's fucking creepy, and it's worse than it was 20 years ago. As stated in this thread, pretty soon everyone will know everything about you because of some chip in your body. LOL It's fucking nuts.

(And yes I am high - on life. hehe)

I know right...the other day I called for a hooker and they knew exactly what I liked and what I liked to have done to me and fixed me right up!

Talk about giving great "service"!

My car will do a few short bursts of the horn if I try to remotely lock it and a door is wide open, or not properly closed. Presumably cars that feature auto-lock do something similar.

I agree that auto-lock could make people complacent. How can you be sure your car is actually secure when you're just walking off without needing to do anything? What if your key runs out of juice, and your car doesn't actually lock? What happens if there's still passengers in your car?

With my "old school" remote central I always press my lock button twice in succession as I walk away: on the second attempt, it does a "bip" to let me know it's already locked.

This is the reason every store Walgreens, CVS, etc... is coming out with discount cards now, want the sale price? gotta have the card, just a way to track every single purchase you have ever made
