Pretty Important: Anti Piracy
Hi Everyone,
I have a bit to say to please be patient with me for a moment. This is quite important to those looking to stop piracy and put a hurt on the file locker income. First, I'd like to properly introduce myself. My name is Matt. I've worked in the industry since 2002 first as a hobby and later as a passion. Since 2008 I've been working for and with Jim Schaffer on numerous projects. For a few years I've been doing research into a universal anti-piracy solution as well as methods to tie up the loose-ends like file lockers. The truth is that real piracy-stopping solutions are extremely expensive, and none of them, even the ones we fantasize about, are full-proof. There's no silver bullet to piracy. But a multi-pronged solution is what we really need. After many discussions with other producers and webmasters, it seems like the biggest cost (real development) is what holds us back. And stepping forward to pay for such a big project is an enormous gamble. (I'm sure we all know this.) In January, I gathered a team of highly skilled developers to begin the high and low-level planning and development of this system. We're coming close to having a working alpha. One we'll be testing on a couple of my own sites. However we still need information from other webmasters and producers. Past DRM solutions have failed; leaving some customers without a way to watch content, and others causing massive support headaches for the webmasters. DRM is crappy solution and we all know this. But one that isn't under the guise of a DRM solution is one that is excepted (HBO Go, NetFlix, HULU, etc). In addition to a customer-facing anti-piracy solution, we've devised a anti-file-locker solution as well. One that can take down the file lockers just as fast as Napster went down in flames the moment things got hot. This project is one that Jim Schaffer and I have planned to do and he's one of many that feels this could bring back the member and affiliate models quickly. This solution will handle secure storage and delivery of your video content to your customers and will work with LOTS of different business models. At the moment, our target demographic is membership sites, but the solution can and will work for the following models and more as we find need:
The entire system is built on the Amazon Cloud, providing extremely fast delivery to the customer. Storage is handled on a highly secure intranet. What I need from you, and you can contact me directly if it makes you more comfortable, is what this type of solution would be worth to you. Be honest and keep in mind this would mean you won't need to have remotely as much bandwidth or storage for your own systems as the bulk of that would be handled by this system. We've planned on pricing the system based on a few different models such as pricing by the protected video minutes per month. Any details you can provide would help, like how much video you currently have and how many downloads/views you get on average. Also, if you don't feel comfortable with providing that information, just knowing you're interested in the system goes a long way. If you have any questions regarding the system, please let me know. I'm quite transparent about these things. You can contact me directly at [email protected] or (if PMs work on this GFY) you can PM me. This info is strictly for survey purposes so we can get an idea of what we should be charging. Our goal is to come as close to your current hosting costs as possible. We know we're going to take a hit as it is, but we also know this is a necessary step to take to get the ball rolling. I hope to hear from you. ![]() Thanks, Matt. |

Is there another GFY ? What am I missing. I hate it when people don't tell me shit. I am always the last to know, they always try to leave me out but I find them anyway, the fuckers.
Oh, almost forgot. Welcome to GFY, good luck with your very ambitious project. Now, either show us some tits or ![]() . |

How does this system prevent content from being shared on file lockers ?

There are actually a couple of prongs to stop file sharing. The biggest one is a universal DRM. One that works on all platforms (except Linux due to kernel security issues) and leaves just the analog hole. This will not be strippable DRM. And we have multiple solutions for preventing pirates from simply capturing what is on screen and uploading it without consequence. |

Does this require the user to install any software on their computers ? Multiple solutions stopping screen capture and republishing ? Care to expand on that because if you've achieved that then I would be very surprised. |

Yes, Mac and Android will be supported. We're working on a way to make it work with iOS too. Our biggest issue is that the Apple App store will eventually stop us from providing an app on their App store because of "potential adult content" use.
However, we're working on an HTML5 solution that should cover that gambit. |

Furthermore if it won't work on Linux then presumably it won't work on many smart TV's either, this just alienates people. |

Not necessarily true about the linux and smart TV comparison. Linux doesn't currently have any working DRM solutions. However, every smart TV is equipped with one form of DRM decoder or another. Most have PlayReady or WideVine built into their frameworks. We plan to leverage this technology rather than force users to download more 3rd party software.
I agree that in most cases asking a user to download a 3rd party app is asking a lot and often times not accepted. But if executed right with the correct type and amount of marketing, the download/install can be quickly overlooked as a temporary annoyance. Think about those that have downloaded the Netflix app or Hulu app. They know the quality of the product ahead of time and simply think there's no problem with downloading something that will make their user experience on this device that much better. On desktop computers, we're definitely going to push for the HTML5 solution overall. EDIT: BTW, the use of whatever tool you want is completely up to you. You can use all or just one, the price wouldn't be any different. The idea is to provide a service giving you as many options as possible for a flat rate. The cost really isn't any different in any situation. We will be offering adaptive streaming as well for an additional cost later in the future, but we're still working on pricing for that as it's going to rely on a lot of variables, especially on what information we get from this survey. |

LOL) After a shoot, I asked Nikki Sexx to take this pic with my phone showing the "CyanogenMod" logo for the CyanogonMod forums a while ago. Nikki is really an awesome girl to work with. |
