US And Russia Simultaneously Announce Intent To Arm Opposing Sides In Syria

"In an almost palpable irony, Russian and U.S. officials simultaneously announced their intent to move forward with controversial arms transfers to opposing sides in the Syrian civil war Monday.

If there were any doubts about the proxy nature of Syria for the two sides, the announcements should put them to bed.

Congressional hurdles have been lifted and weapons will soon flow into the hands of Syrian rebels, according to a Reuters report

"We believe we are in a position that the administration can move forward," House of Representatives Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers told Reuters Monday.

Half a world away, a representative of Syria's embattled President Bashar al Assad left a meeting with Russia's foreign minister Sergei Lavrov in Moscow.

?All agreements between Russia and Syria in the area of arms deliveries are in place,? said Qadri Jamil on Monday. ?The contracts continue and are in force.?

The representative of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad also asked Russia for a monetary loan, one that Moscow is still as of yet considering.

Meanwhile, the weapons Russia intends to deliver are of the S300 surface-to-air variety ? which make enforcing a Western-backed no-fly zone all that much more dangerous, not to mention improbable.

The weapons transfers for the Americans have met resistance from within Washington political ranks. Vetting rebel groups in the middle of a civil war is a very difficult process.

"I think we also have to expect that some of the weapons we provide are going to get into the hands of those who would use them against us," Representative Adam Schiff, a Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, told Reuters.

Washington has urged Russia not to arm Assad ? especially with weapons that can threaten Israeli airliners in Israeli airspace and, importantly, block Israel from further strikes in Syria.

Israel has outright told Russia that any S300 shipments would be destroyed. Analysts have said bombing those systems would result in Russian casualties .

In the thick of it all, Lavrov leaves his meeting with the Syrian rep and states that Assad is ready to talk peace.

All the U.S. has to do is bring the opposition forces to the table."

This could go on for some time then, all the West ever wanted to do was quickly create a fake civil war in Syria, put Al CIAda in control (like in Libya) and then move onto the big one with Iran.

Why does the US feel the need to stick their noses in every middle eastern conflict. How many times are they going to give weapons to these lunatics and then be surprised when the use the weapons against other people and turn their backs on their US supporters. Remember a guy name Osama? He was a US backed rebel, how did that work out?

They crazy fuckers will be at war for another 100 years. They have been at war since the beginning of time and will continue for the rest of time.

That's the point. The US now has large bases in Iraq and Afghanistan and a major military presence in the region. How many future wars do you think will originate from Iraq or Afghanistan? Even if Russia put its largest base in the world in Syria, no matter who is in power there, there will ultimately be less armed conflict.

That's silly and naive speculation, not fact. The US and Russia are not involved in a very unstable and troubled region in the eart of a bigger unstable and troubled region because they need to sell 2,000,000.00 worth of AK-47's. if it was some African shithole... maybe.

there are simpler ways to do that - seize the oil fields. let them continue to kill each other which they've been doing for thousands of years and show no signs of stopping any time soon.

Oil was only discovered in the ME a hundred years ago. overall it's done little to make the lives of the citizenry any better, only the religious and military elites enjoy the oil money.

Sorry, but there is nothing about this that is pure capitalism. Under pure capitalism, there would be no government trading with anyone, (using money taken by force from people in the form of taxes, inflation of fiat currency, or borrowing).

Pure capitalism is the free, peaceful, and voluntary exchange of goods and services between freely associating people.

What you should have said is that this is pure corporate cronyism, with is entirely different.

..... just sayin...

Typically proxy wars function best during cold wars, as they become a necessity in conducting armed conflict between at least two belligerents while continuing cold warfare.

there would be no civil war there in that case.(like there would be no war in Libya ,Kosovo or any other similar region if terrorists were not armed by "west"). I am just hoping that Russians finally learned lesson and won't let Syrians like they didn't for last two years.

Typically don't see too many tangos running around with m16's.

Russia and all the Soviet states as well as China, Iran and nk have been dumping hardware in the middle east and Africa for years.. Yet somehow once again it's all the US's fault.

That's why they always use AK's and RPG of Russian origin and not US made hardware.

except Russian hardware is more reliable ,especially in deserts, there is also something with a price of that weapons and accessibility in black markets in those region where people were using it for years and decades back (usually that is all weapons from army that was taken and those armies had Russian equipement and training). Also, trying to force terrorists to practice on different systems is another problem. Very simple explanation. Similar you can see here: http://progress-index.com/news/op-ed...hans-1.1522714 Financing is more important then weapons they are using,of course. USA will anyway profit later once new countries are established (training, selling more serious equipement by NATO standards,etc..)

Using these sorts of conflicts it is very easy to repatriate revenue and fund whatever you want. The "chaos of war" is a good excuse for funds to go missing or very large no bid contracts, etc. 20 bil may not seem like a lot to you, but it is a lot to the people who control things and it is easier to get it with no scrutiny by having a bunch of little, asymetrical unmonitored conflicts outside the range of US accountants.

did anyone think five years ago obama was going to change any united states foreign policy or continue an eye for an eye like another chimp predecessor, cowboy dubya bush. i know what is going on up in the utah mountains of the united states is supposed to protect you from terrorists even virtually but americans are concerned about being spied on by their own government whom have the golden power.

here is an interesting story, forgive me i am not on a personal computer or laptop but look up keywords syrian army chinese soldier nzherald, some intriguing reading.
