Should Fat People Be Shamed?

If they know they are fat and not doing anything about it?

I gotta admit, I'm not exactly a small framed guy myself, but I'm not morbidly obese either, those who are fat and don't seem to have any thought about losing some of their weight, do you think they should be shamed to lose weight (so long as it doesn't go overboard)?

Just to clarify, I mean grown adults, who should know better, not abused kids who's parents feed them McDonalds for breakfast, lunch and dinner...

They should be accountable. If you want to eat cookies and ice cream and cheeseburgers all day long, then you should also have to purchase 2 plane tickets and pay more for health care. People who end up with illness related to smoking, drinking and eating too much should be paying for it.

They shouldnt be shamed, but they should be put on type of program. No offense to any over weight individuals but when you get so big youre in your own way, chances are youre in everyone else's as well. I live my life by this - "You get as much respect as you give yourself" the 1 in 1000 that has a glandular issue is the exception to the rule.

A government program for fat people would be awesome, it would (in the long run) probably save millions of dollars for the rest of us on health insurance and the likes.

Its weird though you say 1:1000 for glandular issues, most fat people seem to say they have those so I'm wondering if there is a glandular pandemic going around that the rest of us don't know about?

no I am not a fatty but this shows how much thought you put into this.
What about those who smoke? Drink everyday? Do drugs?
Drunk driving kills more people then fat people crashing while eating a bigmac.
2nd hand smoke kills others but when fatty eating 40 chicken nuggets he doesn't give me cancer LOL.
These are just a couple that I would shame before the fatties.

Thats what i mean its a constant scape goat. The ones who are too overweight to walk and need one of those power chairs...now those people need to be shamed.

A big part of the problem is that enough people are not educated on how their food choices impact their weight. I'm not talking about fad diets or restricting all carbs. I'm talking about the actual studies that show processed foods are used by the body differently. The easiest example is high fructose corn syrup and sugar. The white beet sugar can be stored by the body in a way that makes it easy to use for energy, but the HFCS attaches to muscles making it extremely difficult to get rid of. Problem is most people don't know that HFCS can be found in everything from ice cream to ketchup and we consume it in a much larger amount than we think we do.

Simply put, education would be helpful.

Should it be discouraged through things like education? Absolutely. Should some holier-than-thou type be running around persecuting fat people to "make them not be fat"? No. That's just ignorance and as far as I'm concerned being ignorant is far worse than being fat.

seems to me if education via government is an option, then government working with businesses to educate them on not using corn syrup woulg go further.

You're right. It also takes a good support network to keep people focused on longterm weight loss. I have been there for friends and family and always had a supportive attitude. I don't think they would have stuck with it had I just called them fat asses haha

I learned all about healthy food choices in school. Every year throughout school. I now have the Internet where I can get information on anything and everything under the sun. I can go in the other room, turn on the TV, flip through the channels and find at minimum 2 shows about food/fitness/healthy living.

We are now part of the information age. It's all out there, waiting to be absorbed. Lack of education is no longer a viable excuse in the Western world.

shame for being fat? is this thread for real? You should be ashamed of doing bad things, causing harm, pain, being a prick, a thief, a criminal... but.... being ashamed of being fat? I'm not fat (I've some overweight now that I spent 1 year in bed, and still nobody would call me fat) but really, can't believe this. One thing is being worried or concerned, but... ASHAMED???? Give me a break

#5. You Develop a Taste for Shitty Food

When You're Poor ...
Shockingly, when you're buying food based entirely on 1) how long it keeps and 2) how cheap it is, you wind up with shitty food. When I was growing up, we knew that the first of each month was grocery day. That's the day that our food stamps came in. Nowadays (in the U.S., anyway) it's all done on an ATM-type of plastic called a link card that gets reloaded with "food only" money on the first of every month. But the idea is still the same: new month, new food. So when our food money arrived, to avoid multiple trips to the grocery store and burning shitloads of gas that we couldn't afford, we bought our entire month's worth of groceries all at once and stored it like fucking squirrels. When you do that, you need shit that won't spoil.

In my experience the people who are most hard on fat people, or negatively comment on how fat other people are, are usually fat themselves.

well, it can be for many reasons, usually health conditions, psychological reasons and eating for pleasure. About health, they can do little. Psychological... depends on the pathology, but really difficult as well. About pleasure... well, guess I'd take relatively seriously to some kind of crazy fucker who avoids pleasure at all costs (and I'd take them seriously because I know they're sick). So, to anyone here saying fat people should be ashamed, let me ask you: did you stop doing EVERYTHING that gives you pleasure? If so, let's talk. Otherwise... well, you're just a dumb fucker. With all due respect, of course

Food for some people can be very addictive - There are chemicals in the brain that are released when you eat and in some people they can be as addictive as nicotine or crack...

I am not saying its the case with everybody, but its the case with a lot of people - Especially those who binge...

And yet we shame drug users right and left for those same chemical addictions.

To me this is heading down a slippery slope.

If you have family members who have diabetes, heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure or any number of other ailments that can often be genetically passed on to someone should those people have to pay more for healthcare? The odds are they will likely end up costing more than the average person.

The two seat thing I don't have a problem with. I spent most of my life overweight and finally got a hold of it a few years ago. I lost a lot of weight and feel so much better now. The way I looked at it was that it was unfair of me to do something where my size my impede on someone else's life so if I had to fly I either paid for two seats or sometimes I flew with friends etc who told me they didn't care if it was a little cramped. Hell, on most airlines anyone over 125 pounds it too big for those seats.

However, I found most people didn't have the same courtesy. I don't how many flights I have been on where people let their kids run around, scream, yell and act terrible. On one flight there was a woman and her three kids behind me. They were all 8-12 years old. They spent the whole flight kicking my chair and screaming. Several people asked them to stop and she just shrugged and said, "They are kids. They will act like kids."

but for addiction to work.. lets say cigarettes and booze

so you drink booze, and really want a cigarette.. that's based on one addiction being fed, and therefore your body 'wanting all your addictions'

so, if sugar is considered addictive..

no, you're absolutely wrong. You shame them if they're caught doing some retard thing, the same retard thing you would shame them whether they were using drugs or not. I don't see you shaming the entire music, movies and art industry, let alone politicians, sports or the mature lady eating pills as if they were bonbons . Same goes for people drinking, smoking, having sex, watching TV or doing a 2 days row to buy the new iPhone when it hits the streets.

I was just pointing out there are various reasons people get fat - Its not just being a 'lazy pig'...

I have never thought that shaming addicts is a good way of helping them - What do you think shaming someone with an addiction they use to cope with life's stresses is going to make them do?

bottom line is some GFY peeps are surprisingly conservative and anti-freedom.

That's why this is such a funny place to hang around, it's like an IQ roller-coaster

How much of this can be solved by the airlines? If people create "profiles" with their height and weight, they can easily put together a system based on BMI for better seat preferences.

This would solve so many issues... but then people would cry and cause problems, saying the airlines are being judgmental and hurting their feelings.

We, as Americans, are a bunch of whinning crying pussies who would rather stir up problems then fix them with easy solutions that could, and maybe, hurt our poor little feelings... plus, we would have to contend with the sue happy lawyers looking to get rich over every little thing.
