Baroness Thatcher dies aged 87
Ex-Prime Minister Baroness Thatcher dies
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-22067155 "Former Prime Minister Baroness Thatcher has died at 87 following a stroke, her spokesman has said. Lord Bell said: "It is with great sadness that Mark and Carol Thatcher announced that their mother Baroness Thatcher died peacefully following a stroke this morning." Baroness Thatcher was Conservative prime minister from 1979 to 1990. She was the first woman to hold the post. Her family is expected to make a further statement later. Baroness Thatcher, born Margaret Roberts, became the Conservative MP for Finchley, north London in 1959, retiring from the Commons in 1992. Having been education secretary, she successfully challenged former prime minister Edward Heath for her party's leadership in 1975. She won general elections in 1979, 1983 and 1987. Baroness Thatcher's government privatised several state-owned industries. She was also in power when the UK went to war with Argentina over the Falkland Islands in 1982."

She hadn't been all there for many years due to dementia, so this is probably an apt time to pass away. Not much of a life living in a state of dementia.

Took on the unions, spanked the Argentinians in the Falkland's War, set about privatisation of companies from the public sector, and did more than anyone to bring down the Iron Curtain and end the Cold War. A Great Britain.

1. Abolished school milk; it was horrid.
2. Crushed the unions. 3. With inflation as high as 26%, the nation was bankrupt; the economy propped up with loans from the IMF and Britain pilloried and pitied abroad. The country's industry was overmanned, uncompetitive and loss-making. Crippling strikes were happening across the country meaning food shortages, bodies unburied, rubbish piled up on the streets, commuters without trains, schools closed down and hospitals in chaos. She fixed all that. |

It has just said on the news that, after coming out of hospital in 2011, she then moved into the Ritz hotel, as it was much more comfier there than at home on her own and had nice lifts. That sounds a pretty nifty way to spend your last years, 'Puttin on the Ritz'. I'd settle for that.

Allowed people to buy their own council house, yep there was a motive to it, but still a good thing. happily told other countries no... which none have done since. all people ever bring up is the milk.. which I remember was always warm and starting to taste a bit iffy by the time you got it, so as a 9 yearold I was pretty happy it stopped. |

Based on the stay of mind she was living with, it was time for her to be at peace. Or at least time for her family to be at peace. RIP

Unions were the vehicle for little Hitlers, who thought the power they had to make everyone go on strike made them demi-gods, and bred the most useless, lazy workforce in the world. Arthur Scargill, blame him for most of what happened, how he became power hungry and ruined the mining industry, he couldn't care less what wages his members were on, he never shed a tear for any of them that died down the mines in neolithic conditions. Ask what miners think of him now. The Chinese destroyed the steel industry for most of the world, not just the UK; it was not Thatcher. Who wanted to buy a ship from the British, it was never going to get built as they were always on strike. The car industry was ridiculously subsidised, plus the cars were a pile of shit, that couldn't be exported. And it's not a government's job to build houses, they don't get voted in by suggesting they will be building lovely new housing estates for everyone! When I worked in London, in the newspaper industry, there were pay packets every week for Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse. Management were terrified to challenge the union about it, they knew they would strike, and that went on for 15 years, the packets were shared on a rota basis to those in on it. I had to strike for 8-weeks and 6-weeks for no reason whatsoever, receive no pay, but the union got their subscription every week, those wages were lost forever. If the toilet paper was the wrong colour it was a strike. If you attempted to do someone's job, like answer a phone, move something out the way, anything that was not in your job description, it was a strike. I once moved two piles of newspapers into a van, to help the guy out and was told to take them off, or there would be a strike ? probably a national one. Every year when it came to pay negotiations it was a strike ? 25% increase or else, and everyone would be on strike while negotiations were being held. Who the fuck would want to work down a mine and the perils that came with it, against a cushy office job, a skill they can learn, a career that was now open to them? Get real, the luxuries of today are thanks to getting rid of the morons that held the country to ransom for two decades. |

It never did get destroyed. It ended. We couldn't produce ships on time, or on budget, but other countries could. The Japanese were building fantastic cars, we weren't; except we do now, but they are Japanese. Other sources of power took over from coal. Progression.
Things change, Britain is the market leader in soft power: music, media, technology, software development, invention, enticing foreign investment and a skilled workforce that doesn't need to shower as much as it once needed to. |

Glasgow City Council have urged people to stay away from the city's George Square after hundreds gathered to mark the death of Baroness Thatcher.
In a statement posted on their website, the Council said it was concerned the gathering was intended to be a "party". ![]() http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotlan...-west-22072150 |

Funny how people can't even remember the lies they were told
The Miners Union said there was a plan to close all the pits. They went on Strike to stop the pit closers. They were called liars and told that there was no such plan The strike was broken They closed all the pits. 300 years worth of coal was left underground rather than have a coal mining industry with workers who did not know how to doff their caps. |

I love how all the Thatcher haters type out their long lists of all the alleged bad things she did but none of them care to fire up the other brain cell and maybe give an opinion of what the alternative would have looked like. Hmmm lets see Jim Callaghan taming the unions and giving Argentina a kick up the ass, Michael Foot charming Mikhael Gorbachov LOL Neil Kinnock standing up for the UK in Europe (if his EU wife Glynis allowed it) I'm glad you assholes can still get so angry about her after 25 years, it just shows she was worth 100 times any of the alternatives you'd have preferred. I think my politics was definately influenced by my parents from my early teens, yes, my dad was a Welsh coal miner down the pits in the 30's and he fucking hated Labour and adored Thatcher and what she stood for. If you wanted to stay in your small world local pit town with your "local jobs" for "local people" then yeah you'd vote Labour.

As a non-Brit reading this thread the pro-Thatcher opinions are more persuasive. Unions were necessary at one time but they became as corrupt as their evil capitalist masters. I'm still pro-union, it's a shame that union leaders and members forgot the purpose of a union. Thatcher and Reagan had a real mutual admiration society between them. Reagan's greatest moment was firing every single air traffic controller who went on strike, thousands of them. K thnx and bye! They never go their jobs back. Idiots.
Could somebody please let Cherry 7 know that the 20th century is over and Communism turned out to be an utter failure, he somehow missed the memo. RIP Madame Prime Minister Rule Britannia!

![]() She did hurt LOTS of people, and each one of those was an "I am entitled" person. Those who didn't have that sense of entitlement and were hurt, were hurt by the Unions - *not* by Thatcher. How people can't grasp that is pretty sad actually. |
