But the cost of milk they couldn't afford would easily have been covered by the union subs that they had to pay, or the beer they were drinking, or the cigarettes they were smoking, while on strike every-other-month throughout the '70s and '80s.
Unions were the vehicle for little Hitlers, who thought the power they had to make everyone go on strike made them demi-gods, and bred the most useless, lazy workforce in the world. Arthur Scargill, blame him for most of what happened, how he became power hungry and ruined the mining industry, he couldn't care less what wages his members were on, he never shed a tear for any of them that died down the mines in neolithic conditions. Ask what miners think of him now.
The Chinese destroyed the steel industry for most of the world, not just the UK; it was not Thatcher. Who wanted to buy a ship from the British, it was never going to get built as they were always on strike. The car industry was ridiculously subsidised, plus the cars were a pile of shit, that couldn't be exported. And it's not a government's job to build houses, they don't get voted in by suggesting they will be building lovely new housing estates for everyone!
When I worked in London, in the newspaper industry, there were pay packets every week for Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse. Management were terrified to challenge the union about it, they knew they would strike, and that went on for 15 years, the packets were shared on a rota basis to those in on it. I had to strike for 8-weeks and 6-weeks for no reason whatsoever, receive no pay, but the union got their subscription every week, those wages were lost forever. If the toilet paper was the wrong colour it was a strike. If you attempted to do someone's job, like answer a phone, move something out the way, anything that was not in your job description, it was a strike. I once moved two piles of newspapers into a van, to help the guy out and was told to take them off, or there would be a strike ? probably a national one. Every year when it came to pay negotiations it was a strike ? 25% increase or else, and everyone would be on strike while negotiations were being held. Who the fuck would want to work down a mine and the perils that came with it, against a cushy office job, a skill they can learn, a career that was now open to them? Get real, the luxuries of today are thanks to getting rid of the morons that held the country to ransom for two decades.
