Ruby On Rails?

How in demand are web developers who are proficient in Ruby On Rails? They are in very high demand as far as mainstream goes. Junior Developers without any job experience are getting offers of $75k to $90k without any college degree. But what about here in the adult world? I don't see it discussed much here. Is there another adult board that people tend to visit for topics like this?

hi r00bz.

I like your site-in-production. I'm new to Ruby, so at the moment I don't see where you've used Ruby On Rails. I see php code in the source code, though. It will be interesting to see how you develop this one. Who did the design? You do both development and design?

mm the back-end is in Ruby on Rails, you cant see the code in the server, php code in source code? I dont get it...
I bought the design in PSD, and I made the PSD to HTML/CSS process.

I should've said "new to programming". Honestly, I can't tell. I didn't think that one single comment would derail this thread. I only really glanced at your source code. It looks like the code in particular is javascript. This is why I stay away from GFY nowadays. People will find any little thing and then try and turn it into a circus. Can't start a reasonable discussion.

These numbers seem seriously inflated; 7k - 9k per month is more like a senior developer salary rather than junior one with no degree and no experience. I ran a few Google searches and sure enough, most listings are for $65k and up, but again, I would lower my expectations considerably if I were you.

If he knows rails for sure and is located in any big city in Canada or the USA, he will get what he expects.

Rails pays more than PHP. Most startups from New York, for example, develop in rails. The problem is that there is a lot less developer that code in rails compared to PHP... so the price raise.

If you start a technical thread and have no idea of what you're talking about, don't expect the experts to take you seriously.

From a programmer's point of view, your thread just didn't make sense. Make threads that make sense if you want to be taken seriously. Just my 2 cents.

It was technical, really? Did others really see it that way? Hmm. I really don't know how it was misconstrued that way. I simply asked if the language was in demand in the adult world. I'm basically gathering information at this point. I was curious really, as it may not even matter further down the line whether it's in demand here or not. But it would be nice to think it was... so I could start off possibly finding smaller projects once I feel proficient enough. My idea was to even offer something for free to get my feet wet.

And to those of you who think my numbers are off... it largely depends on where in the US you work. In San Francisco and New York you'll see higher starting salaries than the rest of the country. Source: Quora.com

PHP is processed server side. So there's no way you could see PHP in his source code. Unless you had access to his server and his PHP files.

That's why you got the reaction that you got. I chucked a little but I wasn't going to give you shit over it.

Oh and just so I contribute to this thread...

COBALT and RPG (wasted my high school years on both of those languages) programmers are getting mid 100's from old banks who are too stubborn to upgrade and want to maintain or are in the process of upgrading to newer systems.

So while you can make $150k+ a year, good luck finding a job.

Similarly....Ruby on Rails had it's happy little time in the spotlight about 8 years ago when the whole Web 2.0 resurgence happened. But it had some spectacular failures too, just look at Twitter. The "fail whale" mind as well have been the "Rails Fail Whale".

So while yes, there are Ruby on Rails jobs out there...it's still pretty much specialized. It's not even most people's 1st 2nd or 3rd choice when looking for a language to build an app with. So don't expect to get flooded with offers.

Note: I like Rails. It's fun to program in. Not knocking it. It did a lot of things for object oriented programming. Django and Cake borrowed a lot from it. I respect Rails and it's community.

you can add 1 more programmer to that rails list, our stuff was all RoR's based, but the fact that it is so specialized makes it hard to find a reliable, decent ruby/rails programmer, that will do adult/porn..but ima noob when it comes to that stuff...good luck with your info search

I really doubt you'll get this kind of money unless you're really lucky. But there's work for RoR programmers for sure. This being said, I'd add some other skills as well if I were you.

If you're just looking for something that is really sought after, go with Java or Python. Java is a classic and if you know C++ you basically have it. Python is the new big thing, very powerful yet easy and it had an incredible growth last couple years

And of course, good Javascript and JQuery coders are always in high demand, specially good ones.

as for discussions on the subject, don't take GFY as a parameter. In general, good programming tasks aren't discussed in this board, but in private, nobody wants to spill the beans and many programmers sign NDAs, so don't expect them to discuss their work in public

Hey Walrus, RoR developers cost a bit more because they are more rare, but at the same time I did not saw the salary range you are talking about here in Canada, maybe you're talking about CA?

I think it's not popular in the adult because it cost more, even though it accelerate the development process. I've dealed from adult companies to fortune 500, and for me it sounds obvious that in the adult business, we are too used to use offshore developers and pay very low price per hour, even though you get fucked at the end.

We are actually finishing a network for the adult business all based in RoR, but I did it in RoR only because my guys are familiar with it. It could have been in PHP with Symfony, and would have been very cool too.

At the end, they all have their pros and cons, I saw terrible things done in PHP and RoR, so a bad developer is a bad developer no matter the language, as a bad driver is a bad one no matter the car.
