Well they managed to make a working 3d printed AR15 reciver

These guys made one in the past that broke after a few rounds, but seems they finally managed to come up with a design that is capable of firing a reasonable amount of rounds with out breaking.

3D printed AR15 lower receiver..

It's still a long way from just printing a gun on a 3d printer because this still depends on all the other regularly manufactured parts. It's just the lower receiver is the part that has the serial numbers, and that's the part that is usually registered.

I'm not up on the law with that kinda stuff, so I'm not sure what kind of legal issues it would bring upon someone whom downloaded it and reproduced it. Perhaps some GFY gun expert can tell us.

Same guys made working 30 round clips as well, pictured above.

I suppose some will now call on a ban to 3d printing as a dangerous and illegal practice ...

Pretty soon we will not be buying products in a store.... We'll be printing them up from designs at home.

They are cheap. Cheap as in buying a 3d printer, producing 10 of these and selling them to pay it off. The reels of plastic are like 50 dollars.

The plastic will go up in price if home printing takes off. Look at the price of ink cartridges for a normal printer.

what's scary is the lack of metal. the easier it is to make firearms without any metal in the gun or bullet the easier it is to get them past metal detectors at airports and public places where people think everyone was frisked

Not a real fear because barrels, bolts, gas tubes, etc, must still be made of some kind of metal which will NOT get past the metal detectors.

There are already 3d printers which can do metal. They're really expensive atm ($500k+)

the part so far that has to be made of metal is the barrel, but people have been playing with ceramic to make barrels with.
They had an all plastic gun in the movie Line of Fire, but there are no all plastic guns available right now

The bolt in the firearm must be relatively heavy and the ABS-stylr plastics are far too light. A lighter bolt would require a much stronger recoil spring and the plastic would not take it.

Also the plastics cannot handle the temperatures generated by the fired round and can therefore not be used for barrels.

"Line of Fire" was just that................a movie.

Lots of shit in movies that doesn't really exist.

Were you to print out receivers and sell them, you would have to possess a Type 07 Manufacturing license or you would be in violation of several federal laws and subject to very severe penalties.

For someone trying to take over the world, you should know, the law has no arms! Hell the bitch is blindfolded....I do not think for a moment, that any law will stop people from making this profitable. As they should.

You are of course 100% correct!

There are risks though.

its not illegal to manufacture your own fire arm as long as you do not sell it, and it does not need a serial number.

Someone needs to make a stand on this, I have a 24" lathe and a 2 axis vertical milling machine with CNC, these plastic glue printers are going to spoilt it for everyone. I'm going to start stockpiling hacksaws and drills RIGHT NOW

100% correct provided you did not manufacture with "the intent to sell".

They already print with ceramics and even metal. It's not a solid metal though, so not as strong as forged or milled.

I've seen that politicians have tried to float the idea of banning any sort of plastic guns to try and spur off the 3d printed trend, but then people will just print them with something else. Like the metal or ceramics.

Meaning we have pretty much come to a point with technology that it will be like trying to fight a losing battle on any sort of meaningful gun control. Granted at this point anyway home printed weapons would be extremely rare but who knows how far advances in home printers will go in say 10 years.

Vat-grown food, another thing William Gibson called in the Sprawl Trilogy. He may not have been the first, but it's amazing how much he nailed in those books.

There will be a ban on gun printing files. It's already illegal to post bomb making information online. They enacted that after the Columbine massacre even though their bombs failed to go off. All it took was them getting the plans from the internet.

So someone will print out a gun and go on a shooting spree with it. Survivors of those killed will sue the printer companies and the site that served the gun printing file. Then the government will ban the files altogether.

Yeah, I want a hand held rail gun!

People out there are doing some very cool things with ceramics, maybe some day, but not interested in getting one if they make one. I like my guns being made of steel!

Why?

You think 3D printing is some kind of secret?

The point they are making is that it is easy to get around gun bans. I don't really agree with what they are doing but they are just showing when there is a will there is a way and technology has made it easier than ever.

I don't really like that any moron can go buy a AR15 but it's not like there is much that can stop it now that there are already so many already out there.

I think some of the legislation is reasonable but I also think some of it is unreasonable.. meanwhile I think the NRA and most pro gun people are always unreasonable, because they fight everything no matter if it's a good law or a bad. They don't work with the law makers at all.

Yes we all know how easy it is to ban files. Especially if they are torrents
