This quiz is bogus. Said I have a Boston accent, when I clearly do not. I'm not even from New England.

"You have a Midland accent" is just another way of saying "you don't have an accent." You probably are from the Midland (Pennsylvania, southern Ohio, southern Indiana, southern Illinois, and Missouri) but then for all we know you could be from Florida or Charleston or one of those big southern cities like Atlanta or Dallas. You have a good voice for TV and radio.

This is spot on. I'm from the Midwest. There are a few words that I say really funny, but I think it's just me.

Here are my thoughts as non English speaker:

3. Of course different, how could they sound the same (unless some strange thick accent)
4. Of course different, how could they sound the same (unless some strange thick accent)
5. Of course different, how could they sound the same (unless some strange thick accent)
6. Of course different, how could they sound the same (unless some strange thick accent)
7. Of course "don" (unless some strange thick accent)
8. This is interesting, mostly because I am not 100% sure how does the name Mary sound, I assume its somewhat similar to merry, but on the other hand a bit different. But of course no one could vote that all 3 sounds the same. No accent could be this thick.
9. As "hot" to me, definitely that. As "whore" - it sounds like Italian gangster from NJ in the movies. Although on second thought it may sound similar to "whore" as well. For me it somewhere in the middle.
10. 100% different. Can not imagine any single person voting the same. Impossible.
11. 100% different. Can not imagine any single person voting the same. Impossible.
12. Yes.
13. Absolutely not, impossible to imagine accent that thick.

Ps: My result was 100% North East. I assume that should be the most "general" English, or "no accent" accent.

You may think you speak "Standard English straight out of the dictionary" but when you step away from the Great Lakes you get asked annoying questions like "Are you from Wisconsin?" or "Are you from Chicago?" Chances are you call carbonated drinks "pop."

Thats totally wrong. I grew up in Western Pennsylvania, they have a VERY heavy accent there. Watch anyone from Pittsburgh talk.

Midland (with 87% Philly). Makes sense for someone who grew up in Baltimore.

I would like to see this question: "Does the 'o' in 'home' rhyme with 'foam' or 'fame?'"

Dat wood tatally ayout me as a self-layther who worked for years to get dat ayout of my accent! :-D

That said, the quiz writer's description of "midland" is insane. If you can be 87% Philly(/Balto), you DEFINITELY sound like a weird scumbag when you speak with anyone outside of MD,PA,DE,VA,WV :-D.

I grew up in "rural New Jersey" - Almost in PA. The rest of my family was from the New Brunswick area, and they all spoke with that Jersey accent. When ever I talk to them it's so obvious they have a different accent than I do. It's very strange.

Thats the point, non Americans won't have accents (I mean they would have foreign accents but not those "local" accents because foreigners learn proper sounds - I mean no way that someone would not notice the difference between stock and stalk and pen vs pin etc)

Yes. I am talking about non English speakers. They learn "proper" pronunciation and stock definitely sounds different ("shorter") than stalk.
I mean even more ridiculous is "feel" and "fill" - EVERY non English speaker would notice the HUGE difference between those. Since this is in the test I assume in some parts of US it sounds the same? Might be, but not for foreigners as they learn "standard" pronunciation.

The Midland- hummmmmm

Born in Tennessee but raised in Washington and California by parents with a southern twang. I think the quiz is a bit off.

"Your accent is the lowest common denominator of American speech. Unless you're a SoCal surfer, no one thinks you have an accent. And really, you may not even be from the West at all, you could easily be from Florida or one of those big Southern cities like Dallas or Atlanta."

as i expected, vast majority of Canadians have no or little accent.

It said I had a 90% midland accent...but the next one (at 80%) was Philly --- and that's correct.

You may think you speak "Standard English straight out of the dictionary" but when you step away from the Great Lakes you get asked annoying questions like "Are you from Wisconsin?" or "Are you from Chicago?" Chances are you call carbonated drinks "pop."

every time I go to Florida they say I talk straight Chicago, do call it pop, guess they call it soda down there.
