Photoshop ect. + LCD monitors?

We would like some new monitors! These big CRT monsters are driving us nuts! But I haven't tried to work with graphics on a LCD screen. How do CRT and LCD compare in a graphic/design evironment?

I do all my design on a laptop, which is of course an LCD. No big deal.

They're getting cheaper too. CDW has an 18" LCD with built-in speakers for $589. Probably cheaper elsewhere.

LCD screens have even brightness across the whole screen, without any inconsistency around the edges. With good color matching, they are pretty great. Plus, less eye-strain from staring at them all the time (no flicker).

Based on what I have seen in person I would make sure to look into your models.

I have seen a more expensive larger sony lcd for example and there were issues with dark areas, like black. Hard to pickup on the transitions.

I have read some reviews of newer monitors talking about this problem as well, so I don't know if its a known downside to the technology or just these models.

For design I would think you want the clarity. I would say though that on the same models the way the brightness works is real cool and the images very clean, I would like them compared to my crt, and of course they are softer on the eyes.

Maybe look at some models in your price range and go look at some hardware sites and read different reviews, or even better get recommendations from other designers, or go look at one in person.

LCDs are good for regular PC usage, business stuff like word processing and web surfing, fine. They save desktop space.

For Graphics and Gaming, they are not as good as CRT models.
Simple fact. A pixel on a CRT is 1 pixel in size. A pixel on an LCD is actually a combination of 3 cells. A red, a blue and a green cell stuck very close to each other. So when you have a clean seperation between red and green let's say, you could actually see a strange "jagged" effect at the cutoff point.

Also, when making an LCD, they accept up to 3 dead pixels. meaning you buy a brang new $800 LCD monitor, and you have two dead pixels, they might not take it back. They'll say it's within specs. I'm serious about this, I used to work in the industry.

If you're going to to graphics, or game, then use a CRT. You can also get true colors.

LCD is good for style, but the big honking CRT is better in quality.

Jizar II, I'm a designer and have used a CRT all my life.

I'm currently waiting for a new 20" LCD to arrive, so once I've had a chance to use it I'll be sure to let you know how it performs in comparision to my CRT.

the only thing i hate about using an lcd is when i have to go back and use a crt for a bit. drives me crazy

there is simply no comparison IMO
LCD is the way to go

Great for photoshop/image ready i feel more precise on an lcd
like when doing slices and such
