Based on what I have seen in person I would make sure to look into your models.
I have seen a more expensive larger sony lcd for example and there were issues with dark areas, like black. Hard to pickup on the transitions.
I have read some reviews of newer monitors talking about this problem as well, so I don't know if its a known downside to the technology or just these models.
For design I would think you want the clarity. I would say though that on the same models the way the brightness works is real cool and the images very clean, I would like them compared to my crt, and of course they are softer on the eyes.
Maybe look at some models in your price range and go look at some hardware sites and read different reviews, or even better get recommendations from other designers, or go look at one in person.
