dropbox, google drive etc - for what do you use it?

Is it for backups? If so don't you feel safer keeping backups by yourself instead of "at someone's else house"?
I know its good for sharing files with other people, but what else?
I was reading that people use as much as 48GB of space, what do they keep there? Videos?

So if you are dropbox/G drive user - shed some light

I dont use them but I can explain the 48GB just a couple of pictures set in raw and a couple of hd video and you already over that. 15 shooting use 118 gig on my hard drive so people that been around for a long time have tera of data.

I bet ya it has something to do with piracy or some other shady activity, you probably upload content there, then with a single click can upload it to a bunch of file sharing sites, or just share it with people directly...

cause obviously using it for backups isn't very practical: 50G is fuck all, upload/download speeds are at best one tenth of what can be achieved with a local hard drive...

Now that sounds like a real reason to use it. You are one of the 1% here

ps: is plugin available for us to use or was it custom made by/for you?

In the real world in my current job (outside of adult), we use dropbox to share marketing material etc between different markets (where for example there's no access to Intra, vpn, whatever etc).. so it more or less mirrors our intranet when it comes to powerpoints, pdf's etc. It's updated when intra is too

I don't really use it for storage.

I use it mostly to sync project files between my office and home PC, and laptop.

I have 18GB of space on my Dropbox and I have my MacBook and iMac setup so that my home directory is in it, and any documents I save on one computer are on the other computer along with Dropbox's version control.

Dropbox is friggin' great. We have about 15 PCs at work. I often need to access shit from any one of them, and it beats running around with a USB flash drive.

Google docs is great for working on papers wherever I am. As long as I have a net connection, and a keyboard, I can get shit done. Love it.

Thing is - why would you better trust your important files to someone else (+in unlikely but possible case of spying/info stealing) instead of managing backups yourself at home or in safe place.

Because sometimes, it's just easier letting someone else deal with it instead of making a back up system of your own.

How many here have their custom solutions setup so all they have to do is save their documents in a folder on their computer and it has version control? Not many.

Storing my private data in the cloud (making it easier for the CIA, and other assorted alphabet soup agencies to snoop through) sounds like a great idea to me!

If the CIA or any other agency wants your data, storing it on the cloud or on your personal network won't stop them from getting it.

What happens if your house burns down and all your backups are destroyed? Sure, I could backup to a disk and store it in another location, but it's far more convenient to backup to Google Drive. Once it's there, I can access it from any computer with an internet connection.

I use dropbox for tons of stuff including insurance cards, library card, costco card and high school diploma...full of tons of shit I don't want to keep in my wallet. I can pull them up on my phone, tablet, laptop or pc in an instant.

dropbox: for iOS image/vid backup and icons/vector image repository for designing.
skydrive: office docs, pdf, logo and psd/ai backups (anything business)
SugarSync: random drop for files to share movies and mp3
Cubby: new just got it free the free space
Amazon: doing nothing with it yet.

my main is Skydrive and Dropbox though. I know a lot of people swear by google drive and apps but I like to keep my personal docs and files away from google.

That's why I said "making it easier."

Just because the CIA can steal your data doesn't make it any less right. Also, when you store in the cloud, rules governing your data can get re-written at any point in time. Never forget that. Instagram tried to modify their TOS only weeks ago in that very manner:

Instagram says it now has the right to sell your photos

Sure, cloud storage is convenient, but ultimately you are exposing your data to a wider audience. Low hanging fruit always gets picked first.

I was half kidding, but people were drooling about 50G or whatever limit in the other thread, I'm still not really convinced what it could be used for, the only appealing use is like some suggested in this thread, sharing work files between devices/coworkers and for that 2G is usually more than enough...

If you need more than that then just use your own server and get 100s of Gigs of space for free and avoid every government agency or some bored dropbox geek combing through your data... even dropbox themselves is probably combing through the data, I wouldn't be surprised if they index everything in your dropdox, and then sell that info to ad companies...

We use it at the office and I also use it to keep pertinent work-related files easily accessible from the home office and actual office. Just save 'em to my Google Drive rather than My Documents for example.

Backups should be local first, then cloud as a secondary backup.

If your hard drive dies how long will it take you to download gigs or even terabytes of data from "the cloud"?

I use it all of the time for when someone doesn't have access to our servers for something I just drag to Dropbox and give them the share link.

Also, some tubes get our promo clips via Dropbox.

I use dropbox mostly as an easy way for our remote guys to get me their screenshots or whatever I have them working on. Easier than getting the tech guys involved to set them up with vpn or whatever.

Also, there's a few sponsors that regularly use it to get me content.

Then outside work, my friends and I use it to store character sheets and whatnot for our roleplaying games. Gives me one centeral place where I can go grab the stuff, or they can grab it if they forget their print outs at home. And of course if we're somewhere and take pictures/video, it's an easy way to share that stuff among ourselves.

I'd never put anything on there that I don't care about someone else seeing since it does have some security issues.
