Sounds like a stupid idea.

We'll see what happens during the first emergency with an armed pilot - will the pilot save the day, will the gun fall into the wrong hands, will someone shoot the controls or an innocent person, or will the pilot go crazy and shoot everyone?

Exactly - having any real guns in a pressurized tube is just asking for trouble. What happens when they kill the terrorist and the bullet travels through the persons body straight out of the plane. Once the bullet punctures the airplanes skin the pressure differential is going to tear a huge hole in the plane and everyone is going to get sucked out to their deaths. Those still buckled in who don't suffocate are going to die as the plane comes spinning out of the sky.

What is this solving?

I doubt they will give them any powerful guns. Probably something like a .22 or a .38.

It would be very hard to get through the glass or the walls of an airplane even with something more powerful.

Actually the are giving them 40 calibre handguns.

I'm more worried about the fact that all our defense measures seem to be going towards fighting yesterdays war, the one we lost on Sept. 11th. Pilots with guns, anti-aircraft missile deployments and shit.. the terrorists aren't going to try hijacking commercial jets again. It'll be dirty bombs, surface to air shoulder launched weapons, or some other shit we don't expect and are least prepared for.

Only thing I can say is - guns should be given only to people who REALLY know how to handle them. There are much better ways than arming pilots. Check what El-Al is doing (Israeli air-line) [actually its the government rather then the airline]

I agree. Now, there is at least one gun on the plane. That allows a new strategy for a potential group of jackers. Especially if pilots "think" they can handle the problem.

The goal should be land the damn plane asap when any issue arises. Therefore, the doors should be made inpenetrable, and the doors should close before passengers are on board, and open after they have left the plane. Very simple.

These strategies, just like "increased" airport / airplane security seem to ignore the fundamental premise of the 9/11 attack.

The terrorists followed the rules , and were extremely successful (3/4).
And were probably able to abort other attempts without being captured...which I find more problematic, and less focused on by any intel agency.

The next attempt will follow the rules, and exploit inadequate policy in the existing security.

Probably terrorists disguised as pilots/flight crew/maintence will walk right on the damn plane, and commender the gun to use on a "group of terrorists."

We will see how long it takes for a gun mishap / drunk pilot / new exploit.

Or depressurize the cabin slightly, at a high altitude you would pass out with lack of enough oxygen. Pilots could then use their oxygen masks and just deactivate the passenger compartment emergency masks, after everyone is passed out they could run back and slit hijackers throats and feel up the stewardesses a little bit.
