Dot xxx renewal time approaches.... what is the consensus of opinion? - GoFuckYourself.com

I have been waiting for somebody else to start a thread like this but as nobody else has, (that I have seen), I will......

I may be wrong, but it felt to me that most people that snapped up .xxx names last year did so for brand protection or out of fear that somebody else would snatch something they had the dot com for. I know I fall into that category.

Of course there were those who bought up what they considered premium domains, with a view to quickly flip, or hold and sell for millions, but I think that the domain price and the fact that most really prime names were held back, contributed to fewer players in that game, and to be honest, I can't remember either noticing an active dot xxx website, or seeing any being re-sold.

Marketing also seems to have died out and basically, it looks shot to me although they are probably banking on some major renewal dollars which could fund some more marketing campaigns however with renewal notices at around $90 a domain dropping in the mailboxes, I am sure many like me are wondering if it is worth it.

I am still undecided to be honest, and wondered what other peoples' views were. Will you be walking away, or will you be staying in for the duration?

Those that are walking away, post what you might be dropping. You never know somebody might want to take it off your hands.

I will start. Will hold my own brands, but thinking of dropping camgirlchat.xxx

It is very easy to be smart after the event but reality is that nobody knew what would happen with these dot xxx domains, and for most people with a brand or a good dot com to protect it would have been stupid not to.

We are now all a year wiser, and it is the opinions of those who initially protected their brands or dotcoms that I am most interested in, not the people who didn't and do not therefore have renewals to consider.

I've renewed all of mine, even the one I'm selling in my sig. I've developed all of the domains and plan on continuing that development through the next year. I think it's way too early to sell anything or to judge the true value of the domains. Especially with 3 other extensions automatically reserved for each .xxx domain you own.

Not getting traffic from it except a few from search.xxx the first month it launched, now 70 uniques a day from it.

Just remember, at the point you renew your .xxx, you'll have spent the cost of about 20-25 com/net/org domains total on it, or one or two better com/net/org domains. Are you getting your money's worth over either of those?

I might be wrong but I do remember something about defensive registrations for a one-time fee, not a yearly recurring one.

So ICM is going to see a HUGE drop in their sales.

But there is no need for other variations of adult TLDs. That's the purpose of .xxx

No other TLDs, unless small unheard of ones, have multiple versions for the same purpose. ie specific country, mobile (failed), education, job related, etc. But there is absolutely no reason for more adult TLDs at all except for registries to make more money..

You might as well just buy a .info domain for a few bucks a year and get much more traffic as your domain is not blocked by entire countries

Search.xxx was dubious at best as the results seemed to shift quite a bit as they started accepting paid listings - the whole thing reeks of a money grab all the way around. It's a shame too, because with unfettered access to the list of .xxx sites they really could have done something decent there.

To the original point, we defensively registered the .xxx and will renew for that reason alone. It is simply a redirect to our .com though, no SEO or anything specific to that TLD. It sucks to have to throw money away like that, but we're trying to build a brand here...

If you trademarked it, then you don't have to do defensive registrations.
Just open a WIPO case when someone starts to use it, or email them at that time that they are using a trademarked name and ask them to hand over the domain.
