A few things you and others fail to understand:
American Football is very different from Rugby. If you play American Football, at a pro or college level without pads, you would get your head cracked. You would probably die.
Pads are for protection, but also for hitting. To say it's for cowards only shows you know shit about it.
The reason why the sport stops and starts so much is because it is a "by play" sport. Understand this concept and you might understand the game.

300lb yes pound, I won't confuse you with stone. Guys are in "high school" hitting tiny dudes playing rugby from the age of 12 all over the rugby playing world probably the US included, you get a mouth guard and shin pads, end of.
II've seen smashed collar bones, broken noses (like mine), concussions, broken ankles, etc.
Rugby is the most man to man contact sport on the planet other than the martial arts.

Anyone, including a rugby player with full pads, going against a pro linebacker will land on his ass.

Oh wow, land on his ass? hand-egg players land on their ass but it is padded isn't it?
Anyway, why are we even debating this shit? It's all well and good being "hard" until you get fucked by injury or brain damage, then where does it get you?
Lets talk motorsport for another example of why this arguement is pointless, my preference personally is in this order (see how many times I disagree with MYSELF):
1. F1 when the race is interesting.
2. Indy Car when the race is interesting
3. BTCC when the race is interesting.
4. F1 when it is boring.
5. Nascar When the race has crashes.
6. Indy Car when it boring
7. BTCC when it is boring
8. Nascar when it is normal.
It may seem i'm being a cunt torwards Nascar there, but I think it is a great sport. It is just another one of them things!
