I failed my fucking SCUBA physical! WTF!?!?

After spending over $2k on diving gear, I get rejected by my doctor and says I'll never dive. And the dive instructor won't accept me into his class because of it. What the fuck man! It's my life, If I get a pulmonary embolism, that's my death, not yours.

Good thing the dive shop offers full refunds. I'm still fucking pissed!!!

why on earth would you buy the gear prior to taking a class? Part of the benefit of the class is to determine what gear is best for you.

Oddly enough I am in nearly the exact situation!

It's the whole liability thing going on.

Here's the thing................you do not have to take a course to dive.

Do your homework, find the books and the most current information and go for it!

I called my insurance company today and they said that they would cover only 20% of the costs since it's a specialist. That leaves me with around $5k to get a comprehensive test.

And I bought all my dive gear from the same place I was taking my lessons (or was supposed to take them). And they offer a 100% refund.

I grew up in Kaneohe/Kailua Hawaii … In the 5th grade a friend and I learned to dive with the help of his older brothers. We would dive all the time and you could ride the bus for .50 cents anywhere on the island. We dove and body surfed all over with his brothers tanks and our misc stuff. It wasn't until I moved back to the mainland and went on a Bahama vacation that I learned I needed paperwork just to fill a tank.

The insurance companies now rule everything we do.

Naw, group fight between drunken parties. Everyone was using fists other than the guy who stabbed me. I thought the guy was punching me the entire time until I looked down and saw all the blood.

Either get your money back, forget about it and stop bitching or go out and dive on your own and not worry about insurance.

sucks, take the online padi training.
then get your brother to teach you the dive stuff.
(i did not recommend this practice, diving is dangerous)
doctors dont care about you, they care about their own exposure to getting sued.
btw, i did not take a physical for diving, why should I? why did you?

Leave the country and get PADI certificated elsewhere. I got mine in Thailand and it is just the same as if I got it in the USA, only I didn't have to visit a doctor first.

It wasn't a requirement to get my labs or physical done before I started class. It was a personal choice. All of my labs and my physical was fine. It was the underlying issue that concerned my doc. I could still take the classes. Hell, they're still trying to persuade me into following through with my classes (I'm sure because once I attend, of my refunds are null and void).

I'm sure I'll still dive shallow (10-20ft) with my brother, but there's no way in hell I'm strapping on Nitrox tanks and hitting 100 feet or more. And I can still lobster dive in the Keys since the spots there are generally 10-15 feet.

Just look for a doctor who will pass you. Never got around to getting certified to dive, but I love to snorkel

be careful, untrained people have died in swimming pools as the dangers of scuba are very real and people dont understand and think its all related to nitrogen poisoning but it is only part of the danger.
Use scuba dive down 6 ft, hold your breath and resurface and you are in trouble, serious trouble. The air in your system expand due the the lower pressure, that pressure is exerted in your lungs, heart and arteries...
Number one rule in scuba, NEVER hold your breath.

Same boat, but mine was high blood pressure. I have no desire to dive past 49 feet. I like shore/shallow dives.. reefs etc. Fuckers!

What kind of bullshit is this?

There is no pressure change on your lungs as long as you keep breathing. If you hold your breath and ascend, you're going to have problems like everyone else. The pressure changes happen to closed airspaces... your sinus and your diving mask. This is why you have to equalize while descending and ascending, and blow air into your mask to keep it equalized as well.

Your lungs do this automatically because you're constantly breathing.

Where in FLA are you? I have a boat here in Miami and we go diving a lot. I know plenty of decent spots less than 20 feet down.

If a fat, old fuck like me can qualify for advanced open water and nitrox certifications, you can probably find a good doctor who will give you the test you need and fix you if he can.

If your condition is truly unfixable, be smart and change sports.

Good thing the dive shop offers full refunds. I'm still fucking pissed!!!
Can't you move to another place - where medical exam is optional ?

The insurance companies now rule everything we do.

Heh, I was just looking at that area in Oahu for our vacation. Recommend it?

Here's the thing................you do not have to take a course to dive.

Do your homework, find the books and the most current information and go for it!

You won't find many that will do it. They have insurance so if something happens to someone, regardless if they lied on the waiver or not, they are still liable.

It sucks, I get it, I can never get certified because of my seizures. But then I think about the crazy stories I've heard from people who don't have medical issues and the shit that can go wrong. Personally, I don't want to seize that far down in the ocean.

Just go to any resort town and do the course there. I recommend Boca del Toro, Panama. $175 to get your PADI open water cert, plus they throw in two free dives on top. Great place to dive, and quite the party town.

All you need for that is snorkel and fins.
My band used to play down there in the mid 1980's and we snorkeled and ate lobster every day.

Thank your doctor, Rob

I used to make my living as a diver / underwater videographer and have seen too many folks that had no business being in the water pushing their luck...

The knife that went into my lung (and punctured it), was twisted before it was pulled out. And that left a nasty mark.

I called my insurance company today and they said that they would cover only 20% of the costs since it's a specialist. That leaves me with around $5k to get a comprehensive test.
Whoa.. dude. Shitty deal. Glad to see that you survived an ordeal like that though, could def have been a worse ending.

But at the end of the day, if there's a will, there's a way (mostly). You can strengthen your chest walls and lungs itself but you cannot strengthen your linings and membranes. Your long term health is most important but I hope you get to clearing soon enough. I always wanted to SCUBA.. It's very fascinating to me.
