![]() if you try to tax me im going to quit you
![]() ![]() NEW YORK -- Attention Amazon shoppers: Be prepared to pay more when you purchase goods, depending on where you live. The online retail giant will start charging sales tax in eight additional states in coming years, starting with California and Pennsylvania in September, as it puts down physical roots in more places. Amazon already collects sales tax in six states. That means many customers will have to dig a little deeper into their pockets when buying on the Internet, which some people see as a refuge from sales taxes. ![]() hotlinked California residents, for instance, might have to pay as much as $9.75 in additional levies on a $100 purchase, depending on where they live in the state. Customers in Philadelphia, meanwhile, would find an additional $8 tax on their bill. Collecting sales taxes is a turnaround for Amazon (AMZN), which had long fought states' attempts to force e-tailers to deal with such levies. States estimate they lose $23 billion in annual sales taxes, some $11.5 billion of it from online purchases, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. Brick-and-mortar retailers have also pushed hard to have Amazon and other web merchants collect sales taxes, which the physical stores say level the playing field. Amazon instead sought to have Congress settle the issue. It is backing the Marketplace Fairness Act, which would allow states to collect sales tax from out-of-state businesses. "Amazon believes the sales tax issue needs to be resolved at the federal level and we're actively working with the states, retailers and Congress to get federal legislation passed," said Scott Stanzel, an Amazon spokesman. Other online merchants, however, oppose the legislation. The consortium, called NetChoice, includes Yahoo, AOL, Facebook, Oracle, Overstock.com, NewsCorp, IAC, Expedia and eBay. Amazon is also expanding its physical presence across the United States, building warehouses and distribution centers. The company is looking to offer same-day delivery to more customers, according to a report in the Financial Times. Amazon declined to comment on the matter. In exchange for bringing thousands of jobs to various states, the company is negotiating delays in collecting sales tax in those locations unless federal legislation is enacted sooner. full article...

I'll be canceling my Amazon Prime membership as soon as this hits Nevada and will most likely just deal with Overstock.com which I already get a nice discount benefit from due to veteran status.

Yeah man, I've been paying tax on Amazon for years now.. but if I had to return something it's not like I can drive up to amazon.com store and speak to a customer service desk.
NY state also tries to force companies to track affiliate sales and collect taxes on their sales. That's why you can't be an affiliate of some companies when you're in NY state. They like to pretend that if I put a link up, that I am a brick and mortar store. So it's easy for places like Overstock.com or Amazon.com to just say ok, sorry NY affiliates, you're cut off because your state laws suck dick. This is a couple years old news for us.. sucks. But I have to admit that I would not regularly tally up my online buys and pay tax on them at the end of the year, which is what we're all supposed to be doing.

Are you talking about an actual internet sales tax or are you referring to dodging your states sales and use tax?
If it's collecting state/local sales and use taxes I'm all for closing this loophole that local merchants can't dodge. . |

its not there are people in these states that want the tax.
![]() Amazon.com has been criticized for collecting sales taxes from customers in only five U.S. states. Several states have passed or are considering "Amazon tax" laws designed to compel Amazon to collect local sales and use taxes from customers. The U.S. has no federal sales tax.

I was reading about this the other day it sounds like one of the main reasons they are doing this is that they want to be able to offer same day delivery on many items. In order to do that they need to have more warehouses and shipping facilities and to get them they have to build in these states which will force them to charge a tax.

laugh but you are ignorant of the facts.
Line 9 of the Kentucky Individual Income Tax Form ... " 9. Enter Kentucky Use Tax due on Internet, mail order, or other out-of-state purchases" Bottom of page where you sign ... "I, the undersigned, declare under penalties of perjury that I have examined this return, including any accompanying statements, and to the best of my knowledge and belief, it is true, correct and complete" Well ........ . |

Sounds like it's just leveling the playing field rather than inventing a new tax.

The rate of sales taxes are just insane.
Why 7, 8, 9 percent? WTF! We want the economy to improve but how does that happen when the consumer loses 10% of their buying power just by waking up in the morning.

If Amazon's customers don't pay their taxes, how is that Amazon's problem? Do we also need a special online porn tax to level the playing field for porn magazines?

This is just the beginning. Local and state governments are desperate for fresh money to pay off their debts. That's what this is about. Not about leveling any playing fields.

Sadly Amazon if fucking over all its customers. Take a look at its free delivery program. Ill give you an example I placed an item in my cart for $3.99 + $3.99 mailing costs .I forgot all about it for a week then when i came to place an order i checked Amazon for other sellers with the same product. I found the same company selling the exact same product for $7.98 and Amazon was giving free shipping. Its a con and i doubt few people realize what they are doing. Its an out and out lie, there is no such thing as free shipping on Amazon its always added to the cost of the item. If they can lie about this what else are they doing ????
I used to spend more than $1000 a month on Amazon but since i found out about this fraud i cut that down to less than $100 finding other online retailers who sell for better prices and don't play these games on postage charges. ![]()

This is nothing about an Internet tax but rather Amazon having to collect sales tax in any state they have a physical presence, which has always been the law. That is growing as people want their shit quicker so Amazon is putting warehouses closer to them. Amazon is still cheaper than a lot of places whether you're paying tax or not. |

If you live in the US and have been ordering off Amazon and not paying sales tax to the state on purchases you made online and did not pay sales tax on you're likely breaking the law.
Most states require you to disclose untaxed internet purchases on your return and pay them what you didn't pay the merchant. It was like that when I lived in Maryland and is here in Florida. I imagine it's like that in most states. |

if someone wants to get rich develop the software that automatically adds the tax from the zip code and automatically sends it at time of purchase to the county who is supposed to get it. Big Big money because its just a matter of time, in the us its all going to be sales tax.

More complicated than you realize.
Quote:
State Rate County Rate City Rate Then there are special rates for Hospitals, Fire/EMT, Schools, Libraries and a couple others. You can have a street corner with four houses on the corners all being taxed at a different rate. Texas does provide a look up service on their tax page so you can enter a specific address. It takes a ton of research. Alaska has no sales tax, but several cities and boroughs have sales tax. Several of which are only taxed from March to September. Then even in taxed areas, Native Americans are exempt. Several states have exemptions for veterans. Then what is taxed is a nightmare. A store might carry 10000's of items and a few hundred are exempt. |

I'm not doubting you at all. But it seems as if the states were really concerned about collecting these taxes, they would mail the forms out to everybody. I'm damn sure not going out of my way to hunt them down.

I see your point, especially since you don't pay state income taxes in your state. But for those in most states there is a line item on your tax form that you would intentionally have to leave blank and then purger yourself when signing. Something that if you are ever audited could be a problem.

Aw seriously? Didn't anyone expect thsi to happen? We have been LUCKY thus far with lack of taxation online.. don't all act surprised now.
Would you rather the first worlds become poor like the third worlds? Tax dollars is what's kept our government afloat. Without it, you have no social benefits of any kind. Roads, medical care, schools, laws... wait... they're all broken anyways. Bad example... But you get my point. Taxes are needed in any economy. Especially a north American economy where pretty much every corporation has foreign coffers to line. How else would money stay in your state/province/whatever if you never pay taxes for tangable goods? Want more income taxes? |

Use Tax
Until a few years ago states had plenty of money. Now with the Recession they are scrambling for money.
In states that don't have an income tax they won't send out the forms as that costs big money. However the IRS shares your tax information with the state's tax collectors. Even states that have no sales tax are going to draw a line in the sand and will start to see if there was a use tax payment. They'll use an artificial formula based on gross income that you must have made some out of state purchases and are subject to use tax. Say you make $1,000,000 they might decide you might have bought $10,000 and owe $800 in use tax and a penalty for non-filing. So any out of state purchase you make keep receipts. Amazon always sends you those emails showing sales tax paid. The use tax might not be that much, but the penalties might be a hell of a lot. By the same token, property and state income tax are deductible for the feds and there's also a formula to deduct sales tax based on gross income. |
