$20 To Anyone Who Can Solve My Excel Problem

I saved it like 20x throughout the past few days but it reverted back to an old version and half my data is gone. It may have something to do with the fact that I shut my pc down last night and it wouldn't shut down so I press the restart button on the pc... not sure...

I made sure that the file was not saved in the same directory or another folder or my desktop. I used the search feature to look for the file name and all XLS files on my pc.

I did have auto-save enabled. I went into this file C:\Users\Bausch\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Excel\

and the latest version is not in there... i also went into the temp file but can't find it there either...

I right clicked the excel file and tried to look at different previous versions but the latest restore point is dated 3/26 whereas I did work on i from 3-26-2012 to 4/1/2012... It's only showing like part of my work. missing a bunch of crap.

Any ideas why it didn't save proper on 4/1/2012? I hit save as and saved it like 15 x at least throughout 3/26-4/1 and everything was there....

however, its incomplete... its showing the version dated 3/26/2012

How do I get the correct one back? I'm fucked.

Change your settings for Windows Explorer.

Windows >> Tools >> Folder Options >> View >> Select Show hidden files, folders or drives

Check the folder where you were saving your work and see if there's a hidden file with your data. If that helps, you can donate the $20 to the FSC.

I already have the "show hidden files" turned on... that's not it.

I am not missing the file... The file is there... It just reverted to an older version. It didn't save my most current work. I am pretty sure I saved it to the correct file, it just did not save my work.

Mutt, I am fine.

You can get it to search the content of files - Search for a string you added in the file.

It can take forever, but......

Isn't it the same thing if I searched for the name of the file? Only one came up and that is the one with the missing data.

I think it auto saves to a temp file called something else. It may not even have the same extention....

Yea I'm in there... I think the excel files are the .xlsb.part files....
so I rename the extension to xls to open in excel. So far it's old workbooks from January etc... When I rename the TMP files to xls they won't open so I don't think those are the excel files. They could be... I don't know.

I don't know how to search for a string in the temp folder.... how do I do that... normnal "search programs and files" won't search in there and can't read xlsb.part files?

Did you work on it on your local machine?
People who opens, especially office files, that are sent in outlook or opens via a browser (Internet Explorer) get the full Excel program window, you are able to click save and it ALL LOOKS fine and dandy...

But it's not!!!

It's actually NOT saving anything at all, no matter how many times you click save, it will look like it's saving but in reality it doesn't happen. I used to run an office support center with 12 guys manning the lines and the users did this all the time. And really, who can blame them, because it all LOOKS just like normal but in reality you're fucked.

If it was a file you originally double clicked on your local machine and opened in your own local copy of MS Excel, then there should be a temporary copy of it somewhere, check:

Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Local Settings\Application Data\Temp

Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Local Settings\Temp

C:\WINDOWS\Temp

See also what folder Excel has set as "home folder", the default "save to" folder.

Hope it helps. Else, stop spending time looking for lost work, just get at it and start re-building - I know it sucks but no need to cry over spilled milk.

i cant get it to work...

i am in the temp folder in local settings C:\Documents and Settings\Jackie\Local Settings\Temp

Folder options in search I selected "Always Search file names and contents (this might take several minutes" ... i also have selected "find partial matches"

it doesn't tale that long to search, theres only 675 items there so very fast...

i served by file name.. by a word that i know for a fact should be on that file... it shows 0 results... anything else i can do?

Looked at where it saves temporarily C:\Users\Jackie\Documents and it's not in there...

looked in the temp file and did a search and its not in there either...
