Dual card slots for CF and SD.

That's all I need to justify the purchase.

We ordered 2 Canon 5D MK III's for production. But I also ordered a Nikon D800 and when I get it I will likely switch back to Nikon

I haven't shot Nikon since 35mm. What is it you like so much about the D800 that makes consider the switch?

I pre ordered two of these bad boys.

The 5D MK III is incredible. The Nikon D800 only increased image size.

Canon found a way to put more photo diodes within one pixel so the image will have far superior dynamic and resolution.

I'm definitely ordering one. I've been using my 5d since 2007 and kept thinking I would upgrade to a 5d mark ii...so with this mark iii I think it's time to finally take the leap.

with me it's the investment in Nikon glass. I did have the 5d w/24-120 f4 for a bit... found the nikon files could take more post for some reason and the nikon just feel better in my hands... going to wait for the d4x tho

3 reasons.

1: Yes, as a backup.

2: Read/Write times.

3: Less stuff to carry to location shoots as my MacBook has an internal SD slot which also takes us back to #2 since the SD is way faster than a USB CF reader.

It's happened to me 3 times. Only takes once to justify it. Plus, lets face it, I've killed a number of cameras over the years. My last 5D repair cost me around $700 and I'm sure my Mark II is due for a new shutter box assembly. It's just time to buy a new camera anyway.

From a cinematographer point of view, I don't feel they went far enough with the update. Mk2 with Magic Lantern firmware will do pretty much the same thing.

Obviously they did this as to not cannibalize sales of the C300, which makes sense for Canon. Not for me.

I've always had a huge respect for guys who shoot high quality pictures. I'm not even close to being good at taking pictures and only use a smaller Canon 550D for some hobby stuff. One thing bugs the living shit out of me... when I try to make HD videos with my 550D it looks like stop motion videos done by a retard (some might say it actually is). Guess my card is too slow or something

You need this: http://cineform.com/products/neoscene#overview

"You see, camera formats are designed for recording, not editing. With Neo Scene you will convert your difficult-to-edit HDV, AVCHD, Canon 5D Mk II / 7D or T2i camera footage to CineForm AVI or MOV files and then benefit from the same theatrical quality and real-time editing performance as professionals."

Do you know if the Cineform MOV is recognized by Final Cut Express?

FCE doesn't work with ProRes unfortunately and it's not in the budget right now to "upgrade" or move to the new Premiere Pro ( which looks great ).

I didn't see the AIC output format supported by Cineform ...

thanks

Thank you. Bookmarked.

I just worry that my card is too slow. When I transfer it to the computer I hardly can play the clips I've recorded and I got some faily fast machines.

I used Cineform products plugged-in to Premiere Pro for years including Aspect HD and then its successor Prospect HD to convert all my HDV footage from mini-DV tapes to the intermediate AVI codec. It worked well in the earlier years of slower P4 & Dual Core computers to make real time editing easier in some ways among other benefits. But nowdays almost every major pc-based editing suite (maybe FCP too, I'm not a Mac expert) can handle all the major consumer, prosumer and professional codecs that I and many others use including HDV, AVCHD, XDCam EX, Canon DSLR video and more. So I would think twice about getting locked into any third party codecs like Cineform at this point because I feel they are passe unless you are mixing a lot of different types of video sources for complex multi-layer editing.

I see the Mark III as a good buy for someone who was ready to upgrade from a lesser body to a full frame Mark II anyway. But I purchased a new Mark II body, prime lens and accessories a few months ago to shoot DSLR video and I am very happy with both the camera's video and photo capabilities so it's too early for me to upgrade again.

Jim, any suggestions for "default settings" on the camera for video? I have read a number of articles out there regarding " setting up your DSLR for video" but there is a lot to consider. Any "tips" would be greatly appreciated.

I've been shooting with it for a while now, love it. The dual memory cards slots are important, doing mostly weddings, when I shoot the RAW pictures go to the CF card and a JPG backup goes to the SD card, works perfectly and isn't much dual write buffering going on.

If you have a Mark II there's really no reason to upgrade, but if you're shooting anything else, now's the time to take the jump.

Not to add more fuel to the nikon/canon fire, but selling all my lenses and nikon bodies in favor of canon was the best thing I ever did. Nikon's in camera color handling is a fucking nightmare.

I think my next camera will be a Canon 60D since it has the flipout vari-angle screen I have to have.

dynamic range is the word you are looking for.
if truly it packs more dynamic range (the amount of f stops from black to overexposed;
black and white film has the highest range, color film second, color dias (slides) is next and only then comes digital.. as having the worst dynamic range) well if then it is quite revolutionary and absolute worth while to take a serious second look at.

Aaron,

I have always been a Nikon shooter and I have a ton of great Nikon glass. I switched to THe 5DMKIIs when I needed to shoot video at 800 ASA which the last series Nikons were unable to do. The new D800 and the MKIII seem fairly close spec wise (and can do video at 3200 ASA no problem) but I am eager to switch back to my Nikon lenses and Nikon bodies which I prefer ergonomically.
