This will be appealed to the Federal Supreme Court, so everything will still be in limbo.

It will be appealed, and heard in front of Canada supreme court ...

I hope it does win there, then it is final .

The government has twelve months to fix the law so it is constitutional. They may be able to make seemingly reasonable changes to make the law legal while still essentially outlawing brothels, or to fight human trafficking and exploitation they could have registration and logs like truckers have to show that each worker is not on premises more than eight hours a day, etc.

Failing reasonable changes, they could regulate and license them so tightly that opening one is basically impossible.
As an example, energy refineries are theoretically legal in the US, "you just need a permit". It's been 35 years since anyone has been able to get a permit. 1976 was the last permit issued to build a refinery, but theoretically it's legal to make gasoline. In practice, it's illegal to open a refinery since they never ever issue the required permit. The court hasn't said that's unconstitutional. At this point, Canada could do with brothels what the US has done with the oil and gas industry - call it legal, but have it take ten years and $350 million to get a permit.

Voted down here yesterday. No brothels in Manitoba for the forseeable future.

I have no doubt the thinking among proponents is that they want to get it more under control, and taxable. Their outspoken reasoning all revolves around safety for the girls, but it's the tax part of it that has them secretly salivating.

It may be the oldest profession but it's also the oldest tax-dodging career choice as well.
