The moronic 'personal interest story' crap and cameo appearances by random people in the audience to fit the narrative always makes me cringe... regardless of the party in power. Who cares if Jackie Nobody found a job... unless she is 6% of the workforce all by herself, she doesn't really matter much.

It seemed sensible and optimistic enough.

Keyword: seemed.

Things aren't always how they seem. They usually aren't how they seem.

Any good actor can put on a suit and tie and read some fucking script and tell you how great everything is.

Maybe you don't keep up with economic news? There is no reason to be optimistic right now.

I'm not much on politics but it seems that nothing ever gets done with these two parties constantly going back and forth. Doesn't matter which party is in control, everything moves slow and just runs it's natural course.

The biggest problem this country faces is that the Federal Reserve controls the issuance of our currency, as well as interest rates and many other things.

This problem is outside of the 2-party paradigm... the Dems and Repubs can argue back and forth over trivial bullshit all they want, it's not going to help anything as long as the private FED is running the show.

People don't understand this for some reason though, they think it's some sort of joke or conspiracy theory or something. It's a damn shame because it's almost too late to do anything about it, the dollar is being totally destroyed and about to lose it's status as global reserve currency. You think things are bad now just wait until that happens.

It is the same for both parties though. For republicans the rich are not the rich they are the "job creators" and blue collar guys are okay so long as they don't want to unionize and if they happen to get hurt on the job or by a doctor who fucks up they better not ask for too much money from the courts.

Same shit, different slant. Both sides play the class warfare game they just do it with different ammunition.

If these dropouts would have been required to stay in school until they were 18...how would they have been lost? Lost to what?

if you read the links I posted for example, a good number of those people left to school to pursue their 'dreams' THUS leading them to where there are now (or in the case of those who have passed on, where they made it to)

Had they of been "forced" to stay in school till completion they might never had done the things they did with their lives.

"LOST" meaning WE as a world might have LOST what they ended up creating, contributed, improved etc etc.

Last night Obama proposed a new 'LAW' that would make it mandatory for people to stay in school until graduation OR you turn 18.

With every 'law' their are some sort of consequences if you were to break the law, total speculation here, but some consequences for breaking this proposed law could be:

Fines, Juvenal detention, some type of parent or guardian 'spanking' etc etc
What happens to people that break laws when their young and have to face the consequences? do their lives turn over a new leaf? or do they head down a completely, different path, IE trigger a new life, full of more law breaking.

I know such law does NOT exist yet, but it just made me think of all the 'famous' drop-outs there have been over the years, and what would have happened to them had a law like this been around and enforced then.

Just something to think about.

For every action there is a reaction...but I think...in general...requiring kids to stay in school until they graduate or turn 18 is a good thing.

I pretty much agree with you for the most part, but at the same time the traditional schooling is also not for everyone, some people do better learning via other areas, and our history has shown / proven that.

Myself for example, I was at a collage reading level by the time I was 10 or 11 I learned more on my own outside of school then I ever really learned in school, I read EVERYTHING I could get my hands on as a child (yeah I was a geek lol)

I personally LOATH what the public school systems have became these days, my oldest daughter has learned little to nothing that we were taught growing up, I ask her about "simple" things that were drilled into my brain by her age and she's never been taught about it (sorry can't give any solid examples now I'm still half asleep lol)

Today (at least here were I live) there's no daily homework, or even reading assignments, and from what I can tell my she spends most of her time being 'schooled' for tests and little else.

I'd much rather home school her if I had the time, BUT at the same time she needs to be with peers her age to learn the social skills that most people don't get when home schooled, so it's just a catch 22.

Maybe instead of making school totally mandatory, offer an 'early out' exam for those who clearly don't need the X more years of school.

I dunno, like I said I pretty much agree, but just can't see a "need" for another mandatory law put in place in our 'free country' (and who knows if it even would ever fly)

Just hearing that last night got me worked up a bit

I personally LOATH what the public school systems have became these days, my oldest daughter has learned little to nothing that we were taught growing up, I ask her about "simple" things that were drilled into my brain by her age and she's never been taught about it (sorry can't give any solid examples now I'm still half asleep lol)

To the best of my knowledge it is already the law in most...if not all states...though it is apparently not uniformly enforced...as the drop out rate is very high nationally.

assuming they would all of a sudden become useless by staying in school a few more years is pretty ridiculous... there are plenty more people who drudged there way through high school and went on to be just as or even more successful so if anything it proves that it has little affect either way.

lets not forget that a good portion of your list of people went back to university to publish papers and teach. I'm also willing to bet that there isn't one of them that would say that an education is a bad thing either.

I thought this was interesting as it applies to government corruption:

Quote:
Some of this has to do with the corrosive influence of money in politics. So together, let's take some steps to fix that. Send me a bill that bans insider trading by Members of Congress, and I will sign it tomorrow. Let's limit any elected official from owning stocks in industries they impact. Let's make sure people who bundle campaign contributions for Congress can't lobby Congress, and vice versa - an idea that has bipartisan support, at least outside of Washington.
Elected officials can legally own stocks in companies and industries they have a direct impact on through their political decisions? Seriously?

Elizabeth Warren said on the Colbert Report last night that there are some U.S. based corporations spending more money per year lobbying than they pay in taxes.

When your apolitical and you watch both sides with the same amount of interest, it's fucking comical. The only goal of a political party these days is to beat the other political party, period. The good of the American people isn't something they are overly concerned with.

The fact of the matter is kids got to make grades; they've got to knock their fucking brains out to make grades, because when you make the grades you get the diploma, and the diploma is your ticket, you get to ride the merry-go-round. Getting on doesn?t mean you?ll catch the brass ring, no, but it guarantees you the chance to at least try. Maybe you've been successful without a higher education, but the odds are against a person trying to make it without one. And if nothing else, studying for all those tests instills a strong work ethic in a kid.

They wanted to hang the auto industry out to dry, possibly killing hundreds of thousands of American jobs in the process. The republicans had no problem bailing out the financial service sector though, which does absolutely nothing except shift money around. You can say that both parties are bought and paid for, but there is clearly a lesser of two evils.

You can currently drop out when you turn 15 or 16 with a parents signature, I think he wants to raise that to 18. I didn't hear anything more dramaful than that. But I don't plan to look into it further.
