Answering Physics Questions, Next 15 Mins

Just got finished wading through some pseudoscience on Neal Stephenson's Facebook page, and have some energy for physics left. For the next 15 minutes (ending approximately 7pm EST), I will answer your theoretical physics questions on the recent Higgs boson news, faster-than-light questions, time travel, etc.

There are over one hundred predictive models for the mass of the Higgs boson, and the behavior of the Higgs field. There are even more Higgsless models that exclude the boson/field from their models. That's like saying "explain the types of clouds" ..

If you're asking why physicists believed it existed without any direct observation, I'd be happy to tell you.

Science has as yet been incapable of proving or disproving a being who exists, by definition, outside of the laws of nature. It's like asking someone in a soundproof room if a conversation is occurring outside of that room.

My personal belief is that a powerful intelligence set the laws of the universe into motion, and has taken an inactive role since then.

Money is launched at 19.6 meters per second from Saint Kitts and Nevis.
What's the kinetic energy of the money ?

Stephen Hawking says that the universe did indeed just pop into existance of it's own accord. At the quantum level some sub atomic particles can just appear and disappear at random. There is no need for a God. Of course I'd like to know WHY and HOW these particles can just appear and disappear, so we yet again get on this endless conveyor belt of cause and effect.

Knock knock

Neutrino

Who's there?!

1) Please explain what we should all do now that things can move faster than light and therefore exist outside our understanding of chronological time.

2) Please explain what we should do now that quantum mechanics suggests the probability of a nearly infinite number of wormholes, thereby destroying our notion of distance.

As I understand it, our currrent framework of physics has two gaping holes in it and we know next to nothing about the true workings of the universe. We know how it kind of works, but apparently space, time and distance can all be hacked. Our national R&D budget is less than spit. Will foreign nations be our overlords in the future, or will they use new science to be our overlords in the past and o longer be foreign?

Thanks

I'm impressed, given the 3 min response time (I'd already hit the sack!)... I had to purposefully remove the spaces to prevent google lookups, so yeah, I'm impressed.

first search in google...

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_eleme...p6_3s2_3p6_4s2

brings up a good question though... if you are able to find the answer in a reasonable amount of time with the help of google or the internet in general is it as valuable or as useful as memorizing the answer? Obviously if you don't understand the answer it is pretty useless though.

well, when I posted, 1s22s22p63s23p64s2 didn't show up in google - that's why I removed the spaces and not post 1s2 2s2 etc. But now a google search with spaces removed maps to 1s2 2s2 2p6

very odd! Maybe google is getting clever too and displaying real-time *learning* abilities

Coming from bank of nevis, it's a reasonable estimate that the mass of the money will be equal to or less than zero.
