My ex-girlfriend and still very good friend breeds and shows champion Bull Mastiffs. I've quite literally seen hundreds in person given the number of Bull Mastiff specialties I've had to sit through. I'm fairly certain that's not a Bull Mastiff at all. Probably an English.

Nice. We had a serious discussion about one today and are no officially looking for a breeder.

Leaning more towards a Bullmastiff at this point, but who knows where we will end up.

Seriously, we have a south African boerboel and a st Bernard both about 150. We rescued both from Gentle Giants in Norco. I highly recommend you think about an adoption they will allow you to come out and see as many dogs as you would like and have tons of mastiffs. You may think you are set on a certain breed, but spending a little time with each dog and being able to see their temperament is worth it.

So nice to know that you are rescuing a dog in need and also getting a dog that is already house trained and in many cases have much more training.

If nothing else i hope you think about it. Rescues are amazing!

Eric I looked a few rescue dogs, didn't really have a breed in mind other than no shedding, good temperament and large and KILLER (I'll post pics) will fit the bill

I went with the puppy due to socialazion... with strangers (and I do mean strangers) coming in an out all day I felt the need to start fresh with a puppy. too much at stake with an animal that I don't know that well.

the guy living in the guest house here has a rescue dog, a yellow lab... and that guy loves the shit out of that dog, and swears it won't 'really' bit anyone... I just can't take that chance. and believe me I didn't really want to deal with the hassle of puppy either. just felt that it was the safe way to go with a business at stake

Once again I will refer you to Gentle Giants. They keep 40 dogs at a time and these dogs see new people every single day, without incident. Both of our dogs see new people all the time and are loving and affectionate with strangers as soon as we say it is ok. Part of that was already trained into them, but the rest we took the time to train it into them as well.

A dog BITING someone is all about training, dogs do not resort to biting as a first, second, or even third response. Unless they are trained that way. None of the dogs you will see at Gentle Giants will be TRAINED in any way shape or form in that manner.

Good luck with the puppy if you finally choose to go that route, I highly suggest you crate train.

I love BIG dogs .... and have been around them all my life.

The only thing that sucks about dogs THAT large is they usually have a life expectancy of 6-8 years only - they are much more prone to heart attacks, K9 Lupus (SLE), Arthritis, and various cancers.

Basically, for the same reason Andre the Giant did not live to be 70 ... the life expectancy of very large breed dogs is much shorter.

The biggest Dog Ever According to Guiness World Records. Hercules was recently awarded the honorable distinction of worlds Biggest Dog by Guinness World Records. Hercules is an English Mastiff and whas a 38 inch neck and weighs 282 pounds. With ” paws the size of Softballs” (reports the boston Herald), the three-year-old monster is far larger and heavier than his breed’s standard 200lb limit.
ok this is bullshit... the breed standard for Mastiffs calls for it to be proportionate to the specific heights and lengths and that is absolutely impossible for it to be within breed standard at 200 lbs. IMPOSSIBLE. Males call for 160 and I think even that is a little high in order to clear a health clearance.

Bull Mastif's are comparable in size and aren't supposed to be much bigger than 130 tops...

no kennel club on the planet would ever accept standards like that, which means anyone breeding these oversized mammoths are hacks. Their life span is short enough as it is, what would you think would happen to your giant dog if it is bigger than the standard? Wouldn't live past 3 or 4 years old tops...
