registrar threatening to delete my domain name unless WHOIS information is updated

My registrar is threatening to delete one of my domain names unless its WHOIS information is updated. My phone number and name are not correct (on purpose).

What is the deal with this anyway? Do I *really* have to give up all my personal information on each domain name I own?

What solutions exist for me to maintain my privacy?

BTW, I already know of http://alternativeidentity.com/ but that costs:

Quote:
The fee per domain name is US$10 per year per domain for the first twenty domain names, and US$2 per year per domain name for each additional domain name.
There is a service charge of US$3, plus postage each time we forward your mail; with no limit on pieces forwarded. U.S. mail forwarding customers must add a minimum US$15 mail forwarding deposit to cover fees and postage. International Mail Forwarding customers must add a minimum of US$25 mail forwarding deposit. Alternative Identity discards junk Spam for FREE and forwards legitimate email for FREE as well.)

I am not doing anything illegal. Never have and never will. But privacy is nice and I want it.

There are registars which provide proxy registrations for you. It uses all their info in the whois for like an extra 5/year or something like that.

Use a PO box. You will have to use your name, but really. Who cares? If you were famous enough to warrant your paranoia, you would probably have the money for alternativeidentity.com.

I want to see solutions without having to use a name or address linked to me for now. I like my privacy and I think I have a right to it.

And it's just a domain name that costs $15 per YEAR. This pisses me off.

If i am not mistaken i believe godaddy provides proxy registrations but i am not sure if you can convert your current domains over to it (i would think you could).`

Every registrar has a policy of populating your domain whois properly. I use Bulkregister and although they might not care at the moment, eventually they and everyone else will be enforcing it.

I agree, but I disagree with enforcing proper whois information. I don't post my name and address on my car for example, but if someone really wants to find out who owns it the license plate gives it away. Why should domain names be any different? If someone really wants to contact me then they can contact my host (who in turns forwards the information to me).

No. But when APIC came after me they let me know! (I should say, some sites on my server were using some pics that they shouldn't have been way way back. I removed them immediately.)

Does not matter who you register with, Network Solutions, the people who oversee the entire databse for .com, .net ( I do not think .org anymore) require that there is accurate information.

Someone is making a complaint against you either to Network Soution, or your registrar - and your registrar has to follow up. So someone had to make an issue from this.... registrars do not just go around looking for violations. So there is a chance no matter where you go you will have the same issue.

I still think you can give information that is not your name or address, it just has to be "real information". So you can still do somethings, without violating the rules NetSol has set up.

I think you are wrong in my situation. I was trying to transfer a single domain name (the only one in the account) and I was having problems with it. After throwing a few tickets back and forth they eventually sent me an email about the incorrect information. Perhaps the transfer itself (from Tucows) caused this incorrect information to be notice.

But what you say is correct 99% of the time.

Yup (replying to Mike AI).

And as the indigo has already stated, all I have to do is put in some info and change it after. Or even as you said, Mike AI, just put in fake information that looks real. It defeats the purpose of their actions but satisfies their requirements.

BTW, my registrar is DirectNIC. Apparently they used Tucows as their registrar behind the scenes when I first started using them.

ya, fuck them. Godaddy.com is the only way to go. You can get your proxy to keep your stuff private for cheap. Transfer your stuff over.

HQ DirectNIC used TuCows originally until we got ICANN approved. ( Which has to be the toughest appovals to get in the world). Tucows wants to do anything it can to keep its domains that it has registered under it.

If you are having problems on DirectNIC's end, if you need help, let me know.....

Mike AI, I have no problems with DirectNIC, as you said these are problems with the people above DirectNIC. It is probably something to do with me transferring from Tucows to DirectNIC that opened up someone's eyes and saw the fake information.

BTW, does "AI" in your name have anything to do with http://www.alternativeidentity.com/ ?

The registrars are likely under a lot of pressure from law enforcement agencies to do this

It helps them track down the c/p operators and spammers who traditionally use a circle of ultra bogus information when registring their domains

if you cannot afford a mailbox and voicemail number, then you need not be registering domains

Me too, but this was a domain that had quite a few problems during transfer from one DirectNIC account (still in Tucows) to another DirectNIC account. I think that is why it came up.

Just get a po box and an 800 # service.

The wonderful thing is once you do this you get fucking assholes calling you trying to sell you shit. In my case a lame mainstream company was trying to harrass me about a newly registered domain name which had nothing to do with them.

http://reports.internic.net/cgi/rpt_whois/rpt.cgi

there's the link, report away fuckers.
