registrar threatening to delete my domain name unless WHOIS information is updated
My registrar is threatening to delete one of my domain names unless its WHOIS information is updated. My phone number and name are not correct (on purpose).
What is the deal with this anyway? Do I *really* have to give up all my personal information on each domain name I own? What solutions exist for me to maintain my privacy? BTW, I already know of http://alternativeidentity.com/ but that costs: Quote:

I am not doing anything illegal. Never have and never will. But privacy is nice and I want it.

There are registars which provide proxy registrations for you. It uses all their info in the whois for like an extra 5/year or something like that. |

Use a PO box. You will have to use your name, but really. Who cares? If you were famous enough to warrant your paranoia, you would probably have the money for alternativeidentity.com.

Every registrar has a policy of populating your domain whois properly. I use Bulkregister and although they might not care at the moment, eventually they and everyone else will be enforcing it.

Does not matter who you register with, Network Solutions, the people who oversee the entire databse for .com, .net ( I do not think .org anymore) require that there is accurate information.
Someone is making a complaint against you either to Network Soution, or your registrar - and your registrar has to follow up. So someone had to make an issue from this.... registrars do not just go around looking for violations. So there is a chance no matter where you go you will have the same issue. I still think you can give information that is not your name or address, it just has to be "real information". So you can still do somethings, without violating the rules NetSol has set up. |

Yup (replying to Mike AI).
And as the indigo has already stated, all I have to do is put in some info and change it after. Or even as you said, Mike AI, just put in fake information that looks real. It defeats the purpose of their actions but satisfies their requirements. |

BTW, my registrar is DirectNIC. Apparently they used Tucows as their registrar behind the scenes when I first started using them.

HQ DirectNIC used TuCows originally until we got ICANN approved. ( Which has to be the toughest appovals to get in the world). Tucows wants to do anything it can to keep its domains that it has registered under it.
If you are having problems on DirectNIC's end, if you need help, let me know..... |

Mike AI, I have no problems with DirectNIC, as you said these are problems with the people above DirectNIC. It is probably something to do with me transferring from Tucows to DirectNIC that opened up someone's eyes and saw the fake information.
BTW, does "AI" in your name have anything to do with http://www.alternativeidentity.com/ ? |

The registrars are likely under a lot of pressure from law enforcement agencies to do this
It helps them track down the c/p operators and spammers who traditionally use a circle of ultra bogus information when registring their domains if you cannot afford a mailbox and voicemail number, then you need not be registering domains |

Just get a po box and an 800 # service.
The wonderful thing is once you do this you get fucking assholes calling you trying to sell you shit. In my case a lame mainstream company was trying to harrass me about a newly registered domain name which had nothing to do with them. http://reports.internic.net/cgi/rpt_whois/rpt.cgi there's the link, report away fuckers. |
