registrar threatening to delete my domain name unless WHOIS information is updated

My registrar is threatening to delete one of my domain names unless its WHOIS information is updated. My phone number and name are not correct (on purpose).

What is the deal with this anyway? Do I *really* have to give up all my personal information on each domain name I own?

What solutions exist for me to maintain my privacy?

BTW, I already know of http://alternativeidentity.com/ but that costs:

The fee per domain name is US$10 per year per domain for the first twenty domain names, and US$2 per year per domain name for each additional domain name.
There is a service charge of US$3, plus postage each time we forward your mail; with no limit on pieces forwarded. U.S. mail forwarding customers must add a minimum US$15 mail forwarding deposit to cover fees and postage. International Mail Forwarding customers must add a minimum of US$25 mail forwarding deposit. Alternative Identity discards junk Spam for FREE and forwards legitimate email for FREE as well.)
