Rackshack.net hosting. Any comparable?
We were looking at a dedicated server at rackshack.net for $100 a month. 400gigs of b/w. Is this a reliable host?
Also, are there any other hosting companies with pricing around the same?

If you can manage a server good ya they are good. We had a server there, but recently moved because of bandwidth issues. Needed something bigger.

rackshack is good for starters. but eventually you'll grow out of independent server solutions and have to go to clustered/load balanced or n-tier solutions.
i've been with rackshack for over a year and a half now, with multiple servers and they've been surprisingly good. their techs are usually dumb as shit but you get what you pay for. if you can admin your own shit, use them for a while until you can move up to something else. oh and since they're month-to-month it's great to not be locked into a contract, you can move anytime.

Rackshack is not a managed server. You have to configure the box entirely yourself thus the necessity of linux web server management. They use a web interface called Ensim which is a bit tedious at first, but does a lot of things pretty smooth. I have seen better deals out there but what do you expect for $100? They set you up in minutes but you have to setup the domains and everything yourself. Pretty decent response time to technical issues.

Rackshack is fantastic, but only if you are a Linux admin, comfortable doing remote kernel updates, etc.
Growth is unlimited there but you will have to fan out to multiple load balanced servers with growth as each box is only cost effective up to 400 gig. Uptime is good and they have 24 hour service but only for reboots and such as you are on your own. If you are not a Linux guru stay away or hire one, otherwise you are just asking for a nightmare. And go for their $129 deal - its more reliable. |

Thought I might plug my admin, since I see some ppl here are on unmanaged servers. dupe at duped dot net. Good guy, knows his shit, and does nice optimizing stuff to servers. Can tweek web servers to run faster when they are overloading servers and general maintenance!

Rackshack network works surprisingly well, if you compare it to other providers. Even NAC had a lot of problems during last several days...
But RS servers are unmanaged so you really need to know what you are doing. Or hire an admin

http://www.servepath.com/servers/index.htm I would rec. www.Candidhosting.com - just don't signup at once, e-mail them a quote instead and you will get a better deal. Neutelligent.com seem to be the same company. |

RackShack is fine until you encounter a problem.
I had some fucking lamer redirect spam from my server, making it look like I sent it. There was over a million messages sent from my server and it was caused by some security flaw in Plesk qmail. The server was taken off line TWICE for it, lost a lot of business. The RackShack fuckers admitted that they KNOW that I am not the one sending the spam and that they're aware of the security flaw in qmail but that they don't care. They said if it happens again my server gets terminated. I got a server over at www.National-Net.com during their price match special. I gotta say, those guys are truly amazing. The support it unbelievable, I don't think it ever took them more than 8 minutes to respond to my Trouble Ticket. I sent shit in the middle of the night, on Christmas and on New Years. They were ALWAYS there. I've used em for about 4 months now and I'm about to get a few more servers. They manage EVERYTHING, from spam related issues to moving my shit from one server onto another. They might cost a little more, but they sure know how to keep things running smoothly. Good luck! Luc L.

Candidhosting.com and Techmedia.com seem to be the best to me so far. That goes for the spec and prices that meet my needs.
But I haven't use them yet. But will be using one or the other. Oz ...:::SEVEN:::... |
