Space Shuttle Tragedy

It's a sad day for humanity when our best and brightest, who risk their lives in order for us to reach new frontiers, actually end up paying the ultimate price for these steps forward.

Today I reflect on everything that pioneers and explorers have sacrificed, just so that we can be what we are today.

I say a silent Thank You for all those who have given so much.

In case you haven?t noticed?. DICKHEAD? nobody gives a flying fuck about any of the deaths in those countries anymore.

We have shoved billions of dollars into building education, healthcare and a steady economy in those countries for over 50 years and they still breed like rabbits while they have no crust to nibble or a pot to piss in.

What happened today was a tragic accident, which is not to be compared to the stupidity of people who make children they can?t feed.

People don't die of hunger because of lack of food or money. They die because of incompetent, corrupt, command-and-control governments (like North Korea's). Our wealth in the U.S. is due to what is left of freedom and capitalism. For us to try to feed all the world's poor would just be to fling money at a black hole, impoverishing ourselves while making very little difference. The only solution to world hunger is development of institutions of constitutional government, freedom, and capitalism.

Compare:

North and South Korea
West Germany and East Germany (before end of cold war)
Hong Kong and mainland China

He's stupid for comparing those 8 people to everybody else. Those people were up there for science and research for the benefit of mankind, not just for the United States. Without innovation and mankind searching for new frontiers, we would still be in the stone age, you dumb kid. How can he compare those people with starving people across the world? Why not criticize the governments of those countries for spending all of their money on warfare and weapons instead of feeding their own people. He questions how the U.S. spends its money when the U.S. is the number one donor to the world food program. Take a look at North Korea: 7 million people on the brink of starvation because of their regime's current and past decisions. But if the U.S. tries to intervene with that tragedy of a state, what do you think people would say?

What simple minded tree huggers like you don?t understand is that the billions of dollars spend on the space program pay the wages for millions of people who are involved direct or indirectly.

On the other hand, any money that has gone to Africa has disappeared into the bellies of those who still cry out for more and more.

Keep your unqualified option to yourself.

And this is our responsibility? Our country has to take care of the whole world? If we took all the money that WE make and give it to everyone else, they'd just end up bringing us down to their level instead of us bringing them up to ours.

You have a computer. You should sell it and give the money to somebody that's hungry.

Still... I bet most of these people were going to be released within weeks or months anyhow... probably DUI's, Drunk in publics and small time shit like that. Most prisons release lots of people every day.

"In all, 114 prisoners are targeted for release this week. The repeat offenders were serving time for theft, drug possession, identity theft and sexual assault."

That may seem like small time stuff to you...until the Jewelry stealing, drug possessing, sexual assailant moves next door to you, steals your mail, and then your identity. I will not even mention his plans for your daughter.

Wrong.. that 8 astronauts => 12,000,000 poor people.. as the matter of fact, there couldn't be a comparative number cos their lives were priceless. They were 8 of those people who made possible for you to get on this board. They were 8 of those people you are being able to make a living off Internet. Hadn't it been for the scientists/astronauts like them who the government spending billions on, there wouldn't be any satellites, no advancement in communication tech, wouldn't be any Internet for morons to post stupid ass remarks on webmaster boards

Umm.. only SEVEN astronauts on board the shuttle Columbia. If you guys are going to bitch about facts at least get the crew size right. It was travelling at 12,500MPH (Mach 18.3) at an altitude of 207,135 feet (39.2 miles).

They died doing something that they knew was dangerous. Space exploration is meant to inspire humanity. Sure, we can shoot each other and blow each other up on Earth, but think about the fact that we have 2 Americans orbiting the planet right now on the space station. We have been to the moon. We have landed machines on other planets that were built by human hands. 100 years ago man was first flying. Think of that. Where will we be in another 100 years? Space exploration is not something we have to do to survive, it is something we do to prove that humanity has purpose. It helps to justify the human spirit. Man can do many things that are easy, but doing something that is almost impossible is what defines us.

Looks to me like the money to keep those criminals locked up would have been there had the voters in Oregon saw fit to pass a resolution for more funding.
