I'm going to show my stupidity here but it's a great time to find the answer to something thats always bugged me.

I've never really been able to pin down exactly what a DJ like Tiesto actually does.

It used to be a DJ just spun records. Then it got more involved with mixing and scratching or whatever.

I love Tiesto, have many of his songs and going to see him live at a great venue is on my bucket list.
I know he is world renown but I just don't know what he is doing up there in that DJ booth that makes him and others like him so special.

This guy in the YT vid is creating the music live on the spot. I've wondered if Tiesto has something similar equipment wise that he creates on the spot like that or does he have prerecorded music that he just mixes.

So I guess my question is whats the difference between this guy here performing that song and Tiesto performing the song?

Tiesto is just playing records. He's beat matching separate songs together by switching between a couple of CD players to create a continuous mix, but there's nothing particularly advanced about his style. People worship him on the back of the music he plays (largely his own, in that sense he's a record producer as well as a DJ), his reputation which is largely marketing driven and drugs.

More advanced DJ techniques include using additional CD/record players to include additional layers in the mix as well as advanced performance tools like Ableton running on a laptop.

There's another class of musicians who will play instruments live on stage in combination with playback tools above. The distinction here is that they are playing live rather than a DJ set.

I prefer this version...

My favorite Adagio is the Albinoni Adagio in G Minor, which many of you may be familiar with as the music in the final scene of Peter Weir's beautiful film, "Gallipoli":

That video was taped on September 15 2001, in honor of those who lost their lives a few days prior, and features Leonard Slatkin conducting the BBC Orchestra.

Adagio is what caught the attention of the IOC.

The Athens Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games (ATHOC) asked Tiësto to perform at the Olympic Games, making him the first DJ to play live on stage at an Olympic Games at the 2004 Summer Olympics opening ceremony in Athens, where he played for 90 minutes.[16] Tiësto flew to Athens in January 2004 to have a meeting with the ATHOC. His Tiësto in Concert DVD caught their attention, after which he was asked to write more tracks based on his opening tune "Adagio for Strings" which could fit in with the Olympic spirit and combine the classical with the modern age; They also requested that he play his own produced music. The first rehearsal was on Saturday August, 7, for an empty stadium; the second rehearsal was on Sunday August 8 with 35,000 volunteers, a lot of the people recognised some tracks like "Traffic" and "Adagio for Strings". The last rehearsal included almost 60,000 people in the stadium which was on Tuesday August 10, there were some technical problems, the mixer broke down, the monitors dropped out a couple of times and the music in the stadium was not continuously on the right volume.

During the parade on Friday, August 13, 2004, all participating nations introduced their athletes—10,500 in total There were 80,000 spectators, only 75,000 knowing about dance music.[17] During the course of his performance the Dutch athletes started dancing in front of the DJ booth and had to be moved on by officials. The performance included new tracks produced especially for the Opening Ceremony and songs that were created to complement the spirit and theme of the ceremony. A condensed studio-recorded album of the songs played on the Olympic set was later released, including new songs specially composed for the occasion, entitled Parade of the Athletes in October 2004.[18] In the liner notes, he noted the IOC requested that the music not contain any lyrics as they could be inadvertently misinterpreted.

No, Being him as a Dj, is $$$

I know a lot of famous Dj's but, he rakes in the most. Is very particular where he spins and plays. The stage, the gear, the sound system is set up for him on spec. If specs are not met, his contract says that he gets to walk away with the 50% down deposit free and clear.

Now, im guessing he may be getting everything up front now. Done a lot of business with all of the big LA promoters. They are the ones that bring in the big Djs. Reza and Dave Dean are still big LA promoters that Tiesto's agents do business with. I own a mainstream Laser company and i work with all of the big boyz.

All I can say is this guy has been doing something right, because he is still a huge draw and he still makes the most money. Seen him spin from stage 15+ times, including in Ibiza Spain.

His shows are nutz!!

Thanks for the explanation. That's what I was thinking and I just couldn't figure out why DJs were held in such high regard for what they do.

So Tiesto could go in the studio and create a 90 min tape and then just play it back at a concert while standing in a booth with headphones on and that could be his show.

If he was given a bunch of records right before the show and then had to mix them and add beats and take a song and turn it into a dance mix on the spot I would think that would take a huge amount of talent and would be putting on a show.

Again, I'm not bashing Tiesto I'm just using him as an example to try understand what DJs do.

Think of them as modern day composers. Learn about things like tension and release.
