Tiesto is just playing records. He's beat matching separate songs together by switching between a couple of CD players to create a continuous mix, but there's nothing particularly advanced about his style. People worship him on the back of the music he plays (largely his own, in that sense he's a record producer as well as a DJ), his reputation which is largely marketing driven and drugs.
More advanced DJ techniques include using additional CD/record players to include additional layers in the mix as well as advanced performance tools like Ableton running on a laptop.
There's another class of musicians who will play instruments live on stage in combination with playback tools above. The distinction here is that they are playing live rather than a DJ set.
