What's worse? Smoking or dipping?

I want to quit smoking and nothing works for me. I've tried Chantix, gum, patches, lozenges, and cognitive behavioral therapy. My buddy quit smoking by dipping and said it's either lung cancer or mouth cancer...so make a choice.

I am having problems working out and even breathing these days. And dipping make sense for a short term fix.

Dipping is worse by far. A friend's brother lost part of his tongue and a huge chunk of jaw and teeth from chewing for several years. Lung cancer you get lucky and just die. Poor guy looks like he got shot in the face. He can only eat soft foods and talks like he's retarded.

Check out www.northerner.com. It's not chew/dip. Actually, it's a pretty much harmless tobacco product called "snus". Lot's of information on the site. It helped me quit smoking.

Do you have a family? Children, wife? If you dont, fuck it smoke up and roll the dice. If you do have people who depend on you, you are a selfish asshole.

I don't know what dipping is, my fix is ecigs, much better than smoking analogs imo. after 5 months i still have cravings for analogs and occasionally smoke one or two but it's nothing like smoking a pack or sometimes more a day of regular cigs. Now cutting down on nic. levels. Ecigs can be a pain at times though, they are not perfect, due to technology being so young, although it constantly advances. Never the less I think it is a nice alternative to try or consider.

Good luck quitting smoking. Think about will power. Decrease smoking cigarettes to only few a day.

thanks for the link, that looks pretty interesting. There is a ton of information there for smokers but it does not address how it is safer than snuff except to say it is safer than snuff LOL

it would be worth the cost if it is significantly safer IMO

From Wikipedia: Since snus is not intended nor recommended for inhalation, it does not affect the lungs as cigarettes do. Because it is steam-cured, rather than fire-cured like smoking tobacco or other chewing tobacco, it contains lower concentrations of nitrosamines and other carcinogens that form from the partially anaerobic heating of proteins; 2.8 parts per mil for Ettan brand compared to as high as 127.9 parts per mil in some American brands, according to a study by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Health.[4] The World Health Organization (WHO) acknowledges that Swedish men have the lowest rate of lung cancer in Europe, partly due to the low tobacco smoking rate, but does not argue for substituting snus for smoking, citing that the effects of snus still remain unclear. Around 2005 several reports, partially funded by the snus industry, pointed to the fact that no carcinogenic effects could be attributed to Nordic snus and this resulted in the removal of the warning label that claimed snus could cause cancer. It was replaced with the more vague label "Can affect your health negatively". Research is still going on but at the moment no conclusive reports have been made regarding the health effects of snus.

It is much safer than smoking and safer than chew. So far, I've not noticed any negative side effects. :-)

I quit smoking years ago and I'm living large. It's funny how after smoking for so long you forget what it's like not to smoke. Now if someone smokes I can smell it a mile away.

I quit cold turkey, but there are some tricks that smokers never do. Such as leave your cigarettes and lighter on another floor, or other side of your house. No more automatic "reach" for a smoke that way. You have to think about it, and you'll be surprised at how many times you say "ah fuck it" and wait 5 more minutes. Soon it's a half hour and you're challenging yourself to wait longer still. If not, then you dont want to quit. Good luck.

And yes, I have had relatives die of cancer. I just lost a cousin to cancer about two weeks ago.

There are some things that are worse than death. Losing the majority of your lower palette is one of those things. Now they're watching a tumor in his sinus cavity. Sometimes death IS lucky.

I used to do it during hockey season (when I played back in high school/college).

I'd smoke year round and play. Right before what was considered our "season"... meaning winter, I would switch to dip. Don;t get me wrong. I'd steal smoke every now and then when drinking or something like that, but the urge does indeed go away.

The only "urge" I had to smoke was the things that I did out of habit... such as drink and smoke at the same time. The rest of the days? Not an issue.

I would honestly say, the lesser of the two evils is smoking. There are many factors that are in place as well.

Are you a 2-3 pack a day smoker or a half a pack a day smoker? What kind of cigarettes do you smoke? Do you chain smoke, one after another? Etc.

I would say, that the poster above that stated that you keep your smokes far away from you is a great idea. I would even venture to take it a step further and make a designated smoking area. Smoking in your home is retarded anyways, even if you do live alone. It will fuck your shit up. If you do however, take it outside. That makes it a hassle in in itself.

You will eventually find yourself smoking less and less. Also make a conscious decision not to smoke as often. Buy bubble gum, munch on veggies like baby carrots and celery... use Ran ch as a dipping sauce in a coffee mug. Everytime you want a smoke, head to the fridge instead. (for healthy shit, otherwise you will turn into a fucking blimp)

Another good trick is to take an old coffee can ind fill it about 1/3rd of the way with water. For the next month, use it as your ash tray. After a few days, the smell will be so repulsive you may shy away from that next light up due to nausea. Even go as far as to take the lid off and take a nice big inhale of that shit every time you want a butt.

Good luck on your quest.

I came here to post this.

Also, it's mostly US produced tobacco/chew that is harmful, as it has a ton of additives.

The Swedish stuff from here not only has more nicotine, it's MUCH better for you. The site quotes a few scientific studies, etc., if you read into it.

SNUS is the way to go for sure. It also comes in many different "tastes" and It's a fucking health-cure compared to smoking. We Swedes have been snusing for a century

Quit cold turkey. Gradual or "assisted" quitting doesn't work. Didn't work for me. I smoked 2 packs for most of 15 years. Been smoke free for about 8 years now. What did it? third round of cold turkey.
