So many sales positions paying hourly..

I am looking for a weekend job and I can't believe how many sales positions are paid hourly. Why would that make sense, for anyone? Your idiots don't care if they sell, because they can't make any money.

All of my mainstream sales people are behind telephones in India and Malaysia. It's called globalization. Why would I hire someone in my own country when it's 10% of the cost to outsource ?

What about retail jewelers? Here they are selling some no name "certified by someone" diamonds for a fortune of money and paying their employees $8/hr + 1%.

The three people I employ full time locally and the two part time all get over $26 per hour Australian. One gets $75 per hour.

These people are all professionals and I am prepared to pay well for loyal staff who step up to the plate and will put in more than a 9 to 5 day.

The problem with retail and sales is that companies are happy to pay college students and low end staff peanuts while pushing crap in malls and stores. Door to door sales is basically dead in Australia. Cold calling staff are expensive here and you can get twice the work done for 10 - 20% of the cost from call centres in India and Malaysia.

The moral of this story is, the money is in professional employment, not sales.

Business owners and top level corporate executives need to be salesmen too ? to succeed they need to be able to address the needs of a customer and "sell" them their solution.

There is a big difference between a Retail Sales Clerk, a Phone Solicitor and a real Salesperson.

You're right, absolutely correct on this one.

I make all of my sales generally, however I only deal with real leads and that's where my telesales outsourcing comes in.

If you have a heart attack in the middle of the street while walking alone and end up incapacitated and unconscious why should any of your fellow citizens bother to help you or call for help? After all they probably won't be getting paid for helping you and would only be wasting their time. And time is money. Maybe they will just keep walking? Hopefully they don't steal your wallet.

Because they can speak english? Up here rogers communications hires canadians, bell outsources to india. I refuse to deal with bell because I can't understand a fucking word these indians are going on about.

Yeah , look some of the outsourcing companies are complete garbage. I am happy with the two I use, both Australian owned, they cost more per call than perhaps a telco would want to pay but the calls sound better and that's my desired result.

I guess big corporations really do want to screw down to the last cent and get a crud cheap outsource call centre.

What kind of "sales positions" do you mean? Like the local retail mall? RadioShack used to pay hourly or commission whichever totaled more for the pay period. Course that was 10+ yrs ago. It was always changing for the worse.

In retail the "selling" is done by the advertising department. People on the sales floor are there to stock shelves, answer idiotic questions and provide the occasional upsell, for which they usually get a commission on top of the hourly pay.

But these big names aren't doing much, at least around here, to market anything. They have some circulars in the papers and that's the extent of it. They rely on "mall peasant" traffic (my words for them)

Maybe they don't have to.. they're nationally branded and don't have to, I guess. They still should do more on a local level.

From what this lady friend of mine is telling me they pretty much expect you to have YOUR OWN client base and still work for a tiny commission.

To me, that is just insane.

I have run sales organizations from time to time, sometimes I paid hourly, sometimes commission.

Paying commission only has the following downsides:

1) takes longer to staff - most people are more comfortable with a salary that provides stability, most of the rest are in business for themselves
2) margins are lower, (for me anyway) since a heftier portion of the profits have to be offered to commission based employees to attract and motivate them.

On the other hand you can't very easily "lose" money on payroll with a commission based system.
