Maybe they don't have to.. they're nationally branded and don't have to, I guess. They still should do more on a local level.
From what this lady friend of mine is telling me they pretty much expect you to have YOUR OWN client base and still work for a tiny commission.
To me, that is just insane.

I have run sales organizations from time to time, sometimes I paid hourly, sometimes commission.
Paying commission only has the following downsides:
1) takes longer to staff - most people are more comfortable with a salary that provides stability, most of the rest are in business for themselves
2) margins are lower, (for me anyway) since a heftier portion of the profits have to be offered to commission based employees to attract and motivate them.
On the other hand you can't very easily "lose" money on payroll with a commission based system.
