Mostly this because you don't really know what you're talking about.

Take it from someone who has played Aussie Rules Football, Rugby and American Rules Football; From a strictly violent impact point of view, American Rules is by far the most brutal of the listed sports.

I know it is higher impact, you don't see people get thrown up in the air from a tackle in rugby, but it still looks weak wearing protective gear.

You should go and play rugby in South Africa now that was fun when I played for our school team back in the early 80s over there. Some of the pitches we played on consisted of dirt and stone with the odd patch of grass here and there.

I would much rather get tackled by an American Footballer while wearing all the gear than get tackled by a Rugby player while wearing nothing.

Bagdad

Albuquerque

I don't think North America has any like that though?

Niagara on the lake is about the only one I can think of similar to Newcastle Upon Tyne etc.. probably wrong but don't seem to notice them very often used in US/Canada.

There is some other good one's in England, like:

Faggot

Beer

And plenty of others :1orglaugh

dyna mo 04-06-2011 03:05 PM

i'd imagine it has much to do with how old the country there is. anyone know the history of why tyne is upon wear? that's just classic to me! i should look it up.

Again, it's probably because you've never seriously played both games.

Rugby is a tough and hard hitting game, for sure. It's a different kind of game though. It's more fluent and requires more stamina than American Football.

That being said, the punishment of the hits isn't even close between the two. In American Rules Football, you have larger guys, lining up directly across from each other that are fully rested and are not concerned with what happens to the ball after you're down. You get hit hard in rugby but it's nowhere near the brutal impact of Football.

Welshmorph 04-06-2011 05:26 PM

As a Brit who is a huge American football fan, I agree with Warchild. The speed and the angles you get tackled at are far different in football to rugby.

I used to play Rugby a lot. Never played actual American Football though you are right.

Watching NFL I see the main difference being you can hit whoever the hell you want, this alone probably makes it more brutal.
I wouldn't say the guys in the NFL are bigger than rugby players though.

Would be interesting to see a game of both mixed together.... NFL Rules with no protection and a mixture of people from both sports.

Miami Dolphins fan right?

I know it is a tough sport, but what I said in that post about it, was the wearing protection looks kind of like a joke to most of us brits. Most people I know see it that way aswell.

Different rules and circumstances make them both tough sports.

You don't have the protection in Rugby, but you don't get hit as often or with as much speed.

American football you get hit more with more speed, more often, etc. But you are better protected.

I wouldn't put power/strength into the mix because players from both sports could do just as much damage I reckon.

Almost Definately! that is why both sports have the rules they have, And why we always have a difference of opinion :)

Yes, sadly I'm a Dolphins fan lol.

I appreciate what you say with regard to the players looking like a joke with the helmets and pads on. I've been following football since 1984 and obviously over here if I had a pound for everytime I'd heard someone say that I would now have enough money to buy Wolverhampton and then burn it to the ground. :1orglaugh

Morph

bushwacker 04-06-2011 06:11 PM

The average career of an NFL player is 3.5 years. Every fourth game someone gets knocked the f out. The average life expectancy of an NFL player is 55, could be wrong about the exact figure, but it is in the early fifties. NFL is the most violent sport, they wear pads for a reason. :2 cents:

Dolphins fan here aswell lol. Think I noticed the top in one of your content threads :thumbsup

You are right! And it is one of them things / cultural difference. I think it is because the UK isn't as exposed to the NFL as it is to Rugby and that doesn't help at all. When I was growing up all I watched was football and rugby, played football and rugby and when I used to see highlights of NFL on the news it looked like a joke because there was only a small amount of action being shown.

If there was more of it shown on TV people might think otherwise, I know it has been getting more popular so maybe that will change. With the matches at Wembley etc. Might open more eyes up to what the sport is all about.

WarChild 04-06-2011 06:28 PM

You could be right at the amateur level, but NFL players on average are absolutely larger than rugby players on average. The difference is the bigger Football players only have to move for short stints. Can you imagine a 400 pound lineman jogging up and down a rugby pitch? Me neither.

This is a pretty good article, trying to measure the differences: http://www.ballsout.com/art_rugbynfl.htm

And yeah probably only on an amateur level, there is some huge/strong guys on the NFL that you wouldn't want to be on the over side of.
