Very rare in your zone. How big was it?

Edit: You're sure it was an earthquake? Can't seem to find it on usgs.gov.

Yes, Phoenix, I know. I remember the 5.0 on 23 Jun 2010 They are rarely "that big" there, and a 5.0 is nothing - you can barely feel it.

Yet in the Vancouver area a mega earthquake is expected...

4.7 Magnitude, epicentre was 80km North of Montreal. Small but long lasting - felt like 8 seconds.

Quote:
A 4.7-magnitude earthquake has been detected in Quebec.

Earthquakes Canada said “preliminary automatic detection of a seismic event” had been identified in the Lachute, Que., region at 1:36 p.m. ET.

Tremors were detected as far as Ottawa, according to people posting on Twitter.

Lachute is about 85 kilometres northwest of Montreal and 140 km northeast of Ottawa.

I've felt a few quakes in the past and never thought much about them. Today's was tiny by comparison, but considering the shit going on... it was pretty scary. I'm hitting a bar.

Hey Mark - hope everyone's ok down there ;)

Yea, in Canada thats very common area for smaller quakes (my background is actually in Earth Science) - fairly rich "medi-sedimentary" belt heading thru there, from windsor/NE US from the south - used to be a big mountan range there way back in the day - built up pressures occasionally realease some engergy - nothing like the big subduction zones in the Pacific tho...

For sure - no damage at all. It felt like a big truck, or I should say, it SOUNDED like a big truck. Lots of rumbling.

There was a big one in Montreal about 30 years ago enough to cause damage to some buildings. The Montreal East City Hall was damaged enough to make it unsafe. It was torn down and rebuilt about a year later.

Almost no land mass in the world that isn't prone to major earthquakes. And that area of N. American has a giant underground volcano pushing on the App. range plate from the West. It's only a matter of time before the pressure builds and that plate pops, probably not in our life times but the pressure is building - and those are monster quakes when they happen.

Never did I ever think I'd see the day where we would be talking plate tectonics on GFY

The earth is constantly evolving, and we're just a small part of it's vast history. If the great continental divide happened once, who's to say we won't be experiencing some changes in land mass in the future.

Earthquakes do have a way to get your pulse racing though. Growing up in Hawaii we had little ones all the time, but the biggest ones I've ever felt were in Cali. Now I just stick to the possibility of hurricanes, at least we have an anticipated season for them.

Not a 4.7...

Magnitude: 4.3
Mercalli scale: 3
Date-Time [UTC]: 16 March, 2011 at 17:36:55 UTC
Local Date/Time: Wednesday, March 16, 2011 at 17:36 in the afternoon at epicenter
Location: 45° 34.200, 74° 33.000
Depth: 18 km (11.18 miles)
Region: North-America
Country: Canada
Distances: 6.13 km (3.81 miles) of Hawkesbury.

And there's an incident at the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station also, leaking 73000 liters of demineralized water. Should be on the news soon.
