Earthquake hits montreal! Wed mar 16 1:38pm!

Yup... just had one...

scary.

loreen 03-16-2011 10:42 AM

Very rare in your zone. How big was it?

Edit: You're sure it was an earthquake? Can't seem to find it on usgs.gov.

actually the montreal/ ottawa area gets earthquakes, say yearly

hardly worth mentioning considering whats going on now

i'd freak oout right now if a large gust of wind came by

loreen 03-16-2011 10:52 AM

Yes, Phoenix, I know. I remember the 5.0 on 23 Jun 2010 :) They are rarely "that big" there, and a 5.0 is nothing - you can barely feel it.

Yet in the Vancouver area a mega earthquake is expected...

2MuchMark 03-16-2011 10:52 AM

4.7 Magnitude, epicentre was 80km North of Montreal. Small but long lasting - felt like 8 seconds.

Quote:

A 4.7-magnitude earthquake has been detected in Quebec.

Earthquakes Canada said “preliminary automatic detection of a seismic event” had been identified in the Lachute, Que., region at 1:36 p.m. ET.

Tremors were detected as far as Ottawa, according to people posting on Twitter.

Lachute is about 85 kilometres northwest of Montreal and 140 km northeast of Ottawa.

I've felt a few quakes in the past and never thought much about them. Today's was tiny by comparison, but considering the shit going on... it was pretty scary. I'm hitting a bar.

BlackCrayon 03-16-2011 10:56 AM

i thought i felt a small one here.

loreen 03-16-2011 10:56 AM

**********, relax, you can't have a major earthquake in Montreal :)

DoubleD 03-16-2011 11:41 AM

Hey Mark - hope everyone's ok down there ;)

Yea, in Canada thats very common area for smaller quakes (my background is actually in Earth Science) - fairly rich "medi-sedimentary" belt heading thru there, from windsor/NE US from the south - used to be a big mountan range there way back in the day - built up pressures occasionally realease some engergy - nothing like the big subduction zones in the Pacific tho...

L-Pink 03-16-2011 11:46 AM

Get out before the waves come!

For sure - no damage at all. It felt like a big truck, or I should say, it SOUNDED like a big truck. Lots of rumbling.

There was a big one in Montreal about 30 years ago enough to cause damage to some buildings. The Montreal East City Hall was damaged enough to make it unsafe. It was torn down and rebuilt about a year later.

Almost no land mass in the world that isn't prone to major earthquakes. And that area of N. American has a giant underground volcano pushing on the App. range plate from the West. It's only a matter of time before the pressure builds and that plate pops, probably not in our life times but the pressure is building - and those are monster quakes when they happen.

PornoStar69 03-16-2011 01:19 PM

illuminati just fired up the HAARP earthquake weapon

Kenny B! 03-16-2011 01:25 PM

I didn't even feel it in my neck of the woods, we get them every once in a while, never a big deal.

Jman 03-16-2011 01:27 PM

Didn't feel a damn thing.

Never did I ever think I'd see the day where we would be talking plate tectonics on GFY:1orglaugh

The earth is constantly evolving, and we're just a small part of it's vast history. If the great continental divide happened once, who's to say we won't be experiencing some changes in land mass in the future.

Earthquakes do have a way to get your pulse racing though. Growing up in Hawaii we had little ones all the time, but the biggest ones I've ever felt were in Cali. Now I just stick to the possibility of hurricanes, at least we have an anticipated season for them.

inabon 03-16-2011 01:43 PM

Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic felt a 5.1 today too a little earlier than the one mentioned here.

mchacal 03-16-2011 01:45 PM

The end is coming!

Brazzers shooting another fattie site.

Not a 4.7...

Magnitude: 4.3
Mercalli scale: 3
Date-Time [UTC]: 16 March, 2011 at 17:36:55 UTC
Local Date/Time: Wednesday, March 16, 2011 at 17:36 in the afternoon at epicenter
Location: 45° 34.200, 74° 33.000
Depth: 18 km (11.18 miles)
Region: North-America
Country: Canada
Distances: 6.13 km (3.81 miles) of Hawkesbury.

And there's an incident at the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station also, leaking 73000 liters of demineralized water. Should be on the news soon.

funny thing is, there was another one last june and it hit at almost the exact same time, 1:42 pm vs 1:36pm. crazy stuff.

Davy 03-16-2011 03:39 PM

One day all this will happen in California, too. Big time.
