why are we having to guess re: the situation with that nuclear reactor?

why isn't there an international team that's in that facility assessing the situation and reporting shit straight up? instead we have to rely on occasional mixed reports from various jap gov agencies.

that's fucked!

Yeah, it's not that I don't trust them...

this morning, weren't they saying that the reactor was cooling and radiation levels were lowering? How can that be if they keep releasing steam??

okay, maybe i don't trust them...

Mixed reports from government agencies or is it mixed reports from our own media? I think the Japanese techs are quite capable of doing all that can be done.

BTW...those that are trying to control the situation are probably walking dead men...as there have already been reports of radiation sickness...with some of the techs.

it's not a matter of capability, it's a matter of transparency. if a killer radioactive cloud can be released worldwide, i think it's more than fair to be very transparent and forthcoming with the status of the situation via a 3rd party analyzing and reporting on the situation from within.

i was close enough to chernobyl during its accident to be afraid the first radioactive cloud would rain on us. after the incident, when many facts became clear, everyone believed that only in a stupid soviet system such lying, deceipt and gross negligence on the part of authorities was possible. and yet here we are again, this time a major democratic power, doing the exact same cover up as the soviets...

[8:47 p.m. ET, 10:47 a.m. Tokyo] A state of emergency has been declared for three reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. Roughly 180,000 people who live within 10 to 20 kilometers of the Daiichi plant are being evacuated.

it seemed that most of the workers who would have been the experts fled for their own lives when it first went down...im sure some stayed...but many said they were evacuated from there.

State of emergency declared at Japan's Onagawa nuclear plant; excessive radiation levels recorded, IAEA says.

Further reports are saying that the increased radiation levels are due to the neighboring plants that are having problems.

Don't know if that is a good thing or not. Same thing happened when Chernobyl went up, it was Swedish nuclear plants that recorded increased radiation levels followed by other European plants.

You can count on a worst case scenario on this one. Use your head, use common sense, and trust no government.

i'm not being ridiculous. Japan isn't some 3rd world dictatorship that will spout completely unbelievable bullshit for the sake of it.

International laws only apply to countries that voluntarily sign up to abide by them.

you might to reconsider that assumption. experts interviewed on several news reports state otherwise.

i understand the voluntary nature of some interntational laws and my comment still stands.

you can make this about me all you want but the fact is this about transparency in light of what could be a major event. you might think it's unfair because america is whatever, or because jap officials tell truth but i think differently.

oh and for the record, what happened today was tepco told the government there is an emergency situation.

Quote:
10:38 Sunday- Kyodo quotes TEPCO as saying radiation levels have risen above safe limits around the complex and that the firm has informed the government of an "emergency situation". It did not mean an immediate threat to human health, TEPCO says
hardly a state of emergency declaration and not an official one as released by a government.

you can continue to try and make this about me or you can see that we are not being given viable information.

the problem seems to be: no power, no controls and you can't look into the steel mantle of the reactor. they have no clue whats going on in there, they can just try to cool it down from the outside and hope that this is working. no one tried that before.

A lot of the conflicting opinions in Japan are likely to be because not many people are going to think "oooh a possible nuclear disaster, I must go and have a proper close-up look". Far safer to theorise from a distance.

I really cannot understand why you think you are not being given viable information.

Some radiation has been released into the atmosphere and some people are being treated for radiation exposure while thousands of others have been evacuated from the area...as the Japanese fight to prevent a total meltdown in up to three facilities. What do you find to be not viable?

do you seriously think they are going to tell the truth if a catastrophe is about to happen?

the media would create widespread panic in the US just for the sake of ratings..

sometimes you have to keep things secret until the worst happens just to keep order...

if they came out and said there is a good chance they are going to have a total meltdown and the western US would be effected, you would see total chaos in the US..

if the worse case scenarios are true, you are talking about an entire shutdown of the western US and the US govt would not be able to keep any kind of order...

even though this is gfy, i was surprised to find myself having to defend the position of thnking it's better to have better information. i was esp. surprised to find myself arguing that point with you.

here are just 2 quotes i found illustrating the issue.
Quote:
there were few details about what was being done to bring the situation under control.
Quote:
Edano, for his part, denied there had been a meltdown in the Fukushima Daiichi complex, but other officials said the situation was not so clear.

the lack of transparency re: what is the most catastrophic nuclear event of our lifetimes and i'm having to defend the position of wanting more accurate info.

that's gfy!

i'm saying your view is based on a worst-case scenario that is not yet the case and it also assumes the japanese gov is in cahoots with every other fucking gov on the planet and they are all keeping this worst-case scenario to themselves. AND they aren't doign anything to save themselves.

there was no state of emergency declared today and my news sources are more than adequate.

Now I see. Reading comprehension isn't your strong point then. You got it all wrong. No worries, I can see you are all worked up about something.

you = sad. it's too bad that when there's a crisis, people like you use it to attack others.

yeah, it's my fault, i have reading comprehension problems, my news source is bad and it's clear the japanese gov is forthcoming:

But hours after officials announced the latest dangers to face the troubled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear complex, including the possibility of a second explosion in two days, there were few details about what was being done to bring the situation under control.

What actually went down was

dude said state of emergency declared today

you said "that's been the case for days now"

I said "That one was just reported." That part is fact and was the basis of my post.

Fucking idiot.
