Pinnacle is SUPER easy. I started on this, made 100s of videos with it. You'll be editing within 5 mins.

If you will spend a few hours getting to know it, Vegas is very easy too and more powerful than people often give it credit for. I do all my edits on Vegas.

Don't even think about Premier or Final Cut if you're just starting out. Great software but a large learning curve.

Love me the Sony Vegas. You can get it on Amazon for 90 bucks. Its not the full pro version, but will get 90% of jobs done.

Pinnacle is made for idiots. Here are the problems with Pinnacle:

You're putting your watermark on your footage, get everything just about aligned, but then for some reason it won't allow you to apply it to the entire length of your clip...

And then "An Error Has Occured - This application needs to close". Holyfuckingshit, you're thinking...

So you go back, and try and do it again... this time you get everything where you need it, and then you go and save it... "An Error Has Occured" and it closes instantly. WTF!!

Well, after about 10,000 instances of this happening, I switched to Sony Vegas and I'm AMAZED at it's stability and ability to do whatever I want it to do quickly and efficiently. I think in the past 3 years I've used it, it's crashed only once.

If you just sit down with a knowledgeable video editor for about 30 minutes (Or watch some YouTube tutorials on the basics of Sony Vegas) you will pick it up easily and be able to run with it.

I started with Pinnacle Studio back when I got into this business, then I moved on to Vegas 6 a few months later, since then I've used FCP (too damn slow) and also Premiere, which I'm now starting to make my main editing NLE.
But I keep falling back on Vegas for some things because it can actually do something Premiere and FCP can't.
You can open multiple instances of Vegas and copy and paste between them, I find that invaluable for making trailers.

Do yourself a favor don't set the bar too low, Pinnacle is easy sure... but because it's so easy you don't learn very much.

I think that for this industry Vegas will be your best choice for editing, like DWB said it does more than people give it credit for.

Get Vegas and a good standalone encoder and you should be all set.

You'd rather mention what kind of tasks you want to accomplish.

Virtual Dub is good for encoding, and it's free
As for editing -Adobe Premiere or Sony Vegas. It's pretty complicated software, but you can learn some basic moves pretty fast, and it covers all your needs when you need some complicated job to be done.

No need to start a new instance with Premiere Pro. You can ?Import? a copy of the project files or video files you want then copy and paste between them. Thus, you don?t have to waste system resources by starting a new instance.

I have to say Power Director is the best for me. I guess it just depends on what you need to use the program for.
