I started with Pinnacle Studio back when I got into this business, then I moved on to Vegas 6 a few months later, since then I've used FCP (too damn slow) and also Premiere, which I'm now starting to make my main editing NLE.
But I keep falling back on Vegas for some things because it can actually do something Premiere and FCP can't.
You can open multiple instances of Vegas and copy and paste between them, I find that invaluable for making trailers.
Do yourself a favor don't set the bar too low, Pinnacle is easy sure... but because it's so easy you don't learn very much.
I think that for this industry Vegas will be your best choice for editing, like DWB said it does more than people give it credit for.
Get Vegas and a good standalone encoder and you should be all set.
