I can not seem to find any documentation on how to install FFMPEG on a webserver via SSH. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Do you have centos? Do you have a self managed VPS or server? It's been a while. If you find out what operating system you're running, then you can find it on Google. It's a few command lines and it installs.

My host told me NO, 3-4 years ago. So since I'm Mac, I have it on my machine, and run it from Terminal - which is Linux.

I have about 2 hours of experience with Apache and about 10 minutes with Putty SSH. Perhaps, this will draw a more accurate picture. I have been reading about this all day unfortunately, it's all jumbled in bits and pieces or missing important info and steps, so I haven't attempted this yet. I really need a step by step walk through starting with, I have this downloaded on my PC.

You need to install some dependencies dependending wich encoding format you want to support.

Why do you want to install it ?
Is it for an home made script or for a cms script ?

You send via xml the videos to encode, i take it on your server, i made the encoding with your params, and i upload the result where you want.

It's for my Tube Ace Plug in. I just switched hosting companies and the VPS I had there this was already installed and they managed for me. Now I must manage my own VPS and besides, I need to learn to do these things for myself anyhow.

For ubuntu / debian based:

1) ssh into box
2) apt-get install ffmpeg
3) $$$

For Centos replace 2 with:

2) yum install ffmpeg

Yes this is good.
But at every encode, you kill your disk and your cpu.
That can make your vps slow until the task is finished.

But i know, my offer is better for very large number of videos.

$ sudo apt search ffmpeg
or
$ sudo yum  search ffmpeg

You need to be root (<EEKS!>)

Packages differ by distro and processor architecture
