How are some people forgetting to point out that it wasn't just the USA that was involved in many of these latest conflicts (desert storm, bosnia etc), it was a little thing called the UN(United Nations for those that don't know). Yes the USA does provide a majority of the military might to the UN, buy there are MANY countries that are part of it and also sent troops and supplies. Canada, UK, Germany, RUSSIA(you need some history lessons tolik) and more. The USA just gets the criticism from these dipshit assholes that don't know their ass from a hole in the ground!

what this board shows
Very good point Balljoints. I think that is part of the reason there is so much emotion from non-us countries. They fight with us too and often in larger numbers then us (Bosnia..just ask the Brits and the French) and don't ever get a thank you from the people of the US. Instead they are told that it is only the US that comes to the rescue of the world.
Also (and this is not anti American so please don't read it that way..its just the truth you might not know) the United States has not paid its UN dues in years. We owe amazing amounts of money in dues. Yet tiny little countries that can hardly afford it pay their dues.
I know that the USA does a lot of the fighting but so does the UK, France, Canada and many other countries and they pay their dues. We almost lost our security council vote last year because we were under threat of some sort (I forget the exact method of the threat) action taken by the other countries on the the panel because we owe so much money.
Again, not anti-American..just something to help you understand why some of the other countries has tainted views.

wow! I didn't know anything about these dues that we're behind on
thanks Sarah!
I can KIND OF see where they're coming from I suppose, but it's still not about grudges that they have against us, etc.
it's about human lives that were lost
and the fact that NO ONE is safe!
if WE'RE not safe, NOBODY is!
if they're going to condemn our country and say we "deserve it" they better have a much better reason than past due UN dues or because of something our government did in the PAST
don't you agree?
don't get me wrong...I'm not saying that you implied that, I'm just saying that's not a good enough reason to hate us, right?
Yes I agree. If anyone says this was deserved they are wrong and then they deserve a backlash.
However, some people are being attacked for just expressing any opinion that isn't 100% in support of the US. You can love your brother but still get mad at him.
I doubt those that are being horrid about the deaths even care about things like UN dues..they are just being arse holes (as the Brits spell it).
Just think amongst some members of the board (not you and not the letter you shared) are basiclly going after people on a witch hunt because they are trying to show people why the world sometimes gets frustrated with us. The world is not always wrong..just as the US is not always right..and not always wrong. We have some members of this board who are about to basiclly lose their livelyhoods because they didn't stay 100% in line with military action and tried to express a world view.
Go after evil bastards (as you are) but others need to think twice about persecuting others for having opinions. Freedom of expression is a beautiful thing.

Originally posted by Sjayne: The fact of the matter is that over the years some very bad things have been done in our name around the world. Most of them are things that the majority of American don't even know took place.
We have caused the deaths of large populations of innocent people. Not always through bombing and outright war but by indirect but higly vidible (in those countries but not ours) means.
An example is the backing of dictaorships in Chillie. If you don't know what happened there then you need to read up on history. It has been in the news again over the last year because the British arrested the dictator that both of our governments once supported. We are talking people being tortured and killed in massive numbers.
Think about the Russians in relation to what is going on at the moment. A LOT of their people died fighting in war against Afghanistan and a lot of the time they died at the end of weapons that the United States supplied to their enemy.
Think about all those millions of people in countries that have been victims of terrible disasters in huge numbers that frankly the American public couldn't care less about.
There is genocide going on in Africa and we do nothing. Of course we are under no obligation to help - other than a moral obligation. However, I can understand why these people are wondering why their lives are worth less than American lives.
I think of those poor women that are under the rule of the Taliban that no one here gave a crap about. They are stoned in the street if they show too much skin or if they laugh. They didn't alwys live like that. They used to go to school and have right. They woke up one moring to a new government and their country had changed from a relativly liberal Muslim society to one where they could be killed on the spot for disenting. We as Americans are suppose to care about things like that but we did not demand that any action be taken to help these people. Would it have helped if they were white and European? Well the fact of the matter is again that that government was put in place with OUR gun and OUR backing. Top that off with the fact that the leader of the opppsition in Afghanistan (aka the good guy) was confirmed dead yesterday and these women must feel they have no hope. That is of course if they know it happened because TV is BANNED. So is the internet. So your tax dollars went to putting those women in hell and most of you (you being general) couldn't honestly care less. If you do why haven't you voiced your disgust to your government? Can you blame these trapped people from thinking their lives are seen as less important than those of Americans?
So..while I think ANYONE that would suggest that Americans deserved to die is evil..I also think that when things have calmed down a bit we all owe it to those that died to read the history of what our government has done around the world. To understand why people sometimes see our government as the bad guy. We do so much good in the world but as you know one bad deed over powers the good ones.
