I can't tell from what I've seen if he's lying or not. My info at Matrix is the same info at a number of other places. Of course, there are only a few places that have my old address and Matrix is one of them, but...
My problem with his theory is that these letters would be coming to our domain registration info address. His theory is that some boiler room of college kids are searching for "Matrix Content" in our 2257 pages and then sending us the letters. My domain info is different than my check information submitted to sponsors and content providers. Also, "matrix content" isn't on any of my 2257 pages.
I hope that someday we can all figure out what happened and why and who should shoulder the blame, but until then I'm just being careful.
Bush can no more fire Rove than Charlie McCarthy could fire Edgar Bergen.

hint - it was matrix.
This dog, is dog, a dog, good dog, way dog, to dog, keep dog, an dog, idiot dog, busy dog, for dog, 20 dog, seconds dog!
One thing Matrix mentions on the interview is peoples sites being located by searching google for matrix and having 2257 statements come up. I don't know how likely that it would be that this is how it happened. However, I suggest using a JPEG for your statemtent. I've done that all along myself.
I don't like any information appearing in google that does not serve to directly benefit me.

I don't have any info in a 2257 statement coz I didn't buy their content but I signed up for the site to browse it... there isn't a SINGLE OTHER PLACE it could have come from.
so how much proof has to pile up before its proof. He is obviously lying and has no intentions of comming forward. Its ashamed that such a good business is gonna go under and its owner be thought of right up there with someone like Steve Goldman or Steve Goldberg whatever the fuck it is now...lol
First, nothing was said. Then help solve this?pointing to a hack or ex-employee on a post and then being rude. Pointing the issue to a processor or a domain provider and now saying google searches?

Just wanted to add: I don't mention this as an excuse for Matrix. I personally have no ties with them and don't offer this as evidence they are innocent. Personally, from what I've read here, I wouldn't want to be on their mailing list.
My reason for posting this is that it is just a good idea to use JPEG for your 2257. It's just as valid and a lot less problematic. Nothing beneficial can come of that info showing up in a search. It has no advertising value for you and unpredictable consequences.

Google doesn?t even recognize my domain.
Dude, at least you have a domain, I don't even own a domain and Acacia was kind enough to attribute a domain to me.
It's just great to have a couple of interviews [Xbiz] and compare them... Read and weap:
"According to [Norman] Bentley, when Matrix Content was first approached by Acacia, the patent holder demanded that they turn over its database as part of the terms of its licensing agreement. But by the time Matrix conceded to the licensing agreement months later, largely because of financial problems, Acacia had changed its terms and no longer required that Matrix's deal include access to the database."
What the fuck does "because of financial problems, Acacia ... no longer required that Matrix's deal include access to the database" mean?
I read it like this. Matrix was selling it's database at like per account and Acacia could find $50 to pay them. Maybe I'm wrong ... only time will tell.
With all the spelling errors, address errors posted here, there's no way in hell it's just a coincidence that Acacia's list has the same information.
But I'm going to play devil's advocate, for Norman's sake. It's possible that they have some kind of hosted database solution, or a database that was created and maintained by a third party of some kind. Perhaps a consultant of some sort. Isn't it possible that Acacia perhaps came to the third party, and offered to purchase this database... not from Matrix, but from the third party?
I think Norman is really beating around the bush by saying his company didn't leak the info... the info doesn't have to have come directly from his company.
Even thought I think he knows how Acacia got the list, I don't think he'll ever admit it to anyone... he probably never imagined people would put two and two together... figuring most webmasters use the same information when signing up for programs, etc.
Even criminal court doesn't require proof beyond a shadow of a doubt.
The preponderance of the evidence is that some of the data came from listings in Matrix databases. That is enough in Civil Court.
Matrix wants the customers to build the case? Shouldn't that be Matrix's business? Are the customers supposed to do the work? Why do they need a phone call. There are tons of posts all over this and other boards. Fire up the ICQ or Email and start rounding up affadavits.
What can Matrix do? Send a CD for Acacia to stop contacting the names from the list. If Acacia says that they found the names with the exact misspelling and quirks in the Matrix DB from another source, let that come out in court.
It is true that some of the letters sent out could have been found from other sources. That is entirely irrelevant. Some came from Matrix's list. I am behind matrix that they didn't GIVE these lists out. That is irrelevant also. What is relevant is that some names came from Matrix. This is hurting Matrix's business directly and Matrix has a legal right to damages from the party or parties that appropriated the data.
If you have a letter that you are certain is from Matrix, consult your attorney. Not for legal action against Matrix; That would be counterproductive. If Acacia actually files a suit against you based on information gathered without specific reason to believe you were infringing (i.e. blanket suits against an entire database) you may have recourse directly against Acacia.
That is crap that they got lists of domains from the registars with certian adult keywords. I moved over a year ago and updated the registars address record on my domain at my new address at that time. My letter had an address from 4 years ago!
According to the interview he is very afraid to go vs. Acacia. to the cart or to actually do anything about this.
Matrix content defense line is go behind "prove we sold/gave our list or Acacia did use our list at all "
they need must find a way to explain to us what database did Acacia actually use to send out thier letters.
In addition -
They have partnered with Acacia and probably sold the list of their webmaster registrants for some round sum of cash !
