Triathlons, Distance and Adventure Racing?

Any of you into doing Triathlons, Ironmans, or adventure racing?

I'm down 60ish lbs.. and will be doing my first Sprint Triathlon in April.. It's 500m swim, 14 mile bike ride, and 3 mile run... I basically wanna just finish.. But coming somewhere in the middle+ would be nice too..

I also wanna complete my first half marathon this year... and maybe attempt a full triathlon in the fall.. just to finish, not to compete..

I wanna shoot for a few IronMans (or IronBran's as I wanna call them, since my name is Brandi) in 2011...

How many other webmasters compete or just do for fun?

Why not just do a 10k run instead first to get warmed up? or did you do that already? it seems it's way easier than doing a triathlon..

I do ultra marathons. 50 km + / 12 or 24 hour races. Triathlons are fun for training but nothing amazing.

I compete in all distance tri's and just finished my first Ironman a month ago. It is difficult to go fast but it's very addicting too. Good luck to you and have fun.

I am a triathlete. 2010 will be my 3rd season and first season racing as an elite. I find triathlons quite addictive and the fact that I end up racing pretty much the same group of people at every race tells me that I am not the only one "hooked."

I remember going into my first sprint race on like 2 weeks of training. Being a collegiate swimmer and just dabbing into cycling I thought it'd be a piece of cake so I went out hard! Then I remember thinking that being taken away in an ambulance wouldn't be the worst way to end the day. I am not quite sure what exactly happened but when I crossed that finish line something "clicked." Now add a type A personality, 2 years of training and bam!

Sweet ride Sansa, was that at Miami International? I would love to turn pro but have quite a bit of work to do first.

Yep, that's at Miami International. It's an amazing race, definitely one of the best organized ones. I managed to cut my foot quite badly coming out of the water and biked and ran with a shoe full of blood. Still had a blast!

For those trying to get into this sport the best advise I can give is take it slow, get a training plan and stick to it. I know a ton of people who got into it, over trained and derailed their first season. Also don't get a TT bike - it only makes sense after you've been riding for at least a year. Get a road bike and join a riding group. Riding in a group will push you a lot harder and farther than you could ever push yourself.

i guess the iphone workout app is doing good for you. 60lbs is amazing for just a few months. my normal routine is 4mi bike in am, run 5k, swim, weights, and repeat in the PM. i haven't lost any weight but it maintains me, i'm jabba if i quit for a few days... all this is done when i'm not pimping of course... i remember that post from long ago PSO

That's awesome. I still want to get down there for a race soon. Good words of wisdom too for sure.

I am curious too. Mine during the season is something like this...
Mon, Wed, Fri. swim and run, 1 hour each, both each day
Tues, Thurs. ride 2 hours each day
Saturday, ride 2 to 5 hours maybe a run after

I use periodization so my training increases in both intensity and duration but here's an example of what my week looks like:

Monday: Strength training in the morning. Long run at night, usually 2.5 to 3 hours.
Tuesday: Long ride on the TT bike, usually 4-5 hours, 100-120 miles. Masters swim at night, 1 hour, 2500-3000 yards.
Wednesday: Strength training in the morning. 30 minute warmup spin and then 1 hour of speedwork on a treadmill or track. Masters swim at night, 1 hour, 2500-3000 yards.
Thursday: Morning ride with a cycling team, 2 hours at race intensity (28-32 mph). Masters swim at night, 1 hour, 2500-3000 yards.
Friday: Strength training in the morning. Tempo run, usually 1.5-2 hours.
Saturday: Morning ride with a cycling team, 2 hours at race intensity (28-32 mph).
Sunday: Brick workout: 2 hours at race intensity (cycling team), 1 hour moderate intensity run.

On weekends I also try to get out hit the trails on my mountain bike in the afternoon but that's more fun than a workout.
