Recommend Good Video Editing Software for Win Vista?
So I'm on Windows Vista and I'm rather disgruntled to find that Windows Media Encoder doesn't work properly (even after installing the released fix). I'm also having trouble with some other programs.
I need video editing software that will enable me to encode for various file types, edit the video (such as make short clips), and set various compression rates and file sizes. Does anyone have any recommendations for something that works well with Vista?

VideoCharge might have the range of functions you're looking for. I use it to transcode videos to different resolutions and formats, as well as string clips together when necessary. I think you can cut clips with it as well.

Here's what I did:
I acquired and installed a second hard drive and installed Ubuntu on it. Then I installed ffmpeg and ffmpeg-php, and wrote myself a nice little web app to coordinate the conversion/thumbnailing process. Though, it might be more than you're looking for. ![]() |

I use TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress from pegasys-inc.com, it works fine with Vista.

I still have all my pc's on XP because I have so many video editing and encoding apps that I don't want to mess with my "upgrading" to Windows Vista. But if Videocharge works with Vista (I believe it does) that is a good app to encode video and split up clips. For actual editing, you may need to look into a full featured editing app like Adobe Premiere Pro or Sony Vegas.

This is the only thing that has given me any trouble on Vista so far so I'm not keen on downgrading to XP just yet.
So does VideoCharge work well with Vista then? It sounds like most people recommend it. I was looking into Premiere, but I've heard mixed reviews on it.

Or I have my system setup properly the way its supposed to be setup and have all the proper drivers installed. No fucked up ancient hardware etc. Running on 3 computers and none have crashed since I switched to Vista. Lucky me I guess. SOMEHOW all my stuff runs faster, and smoother using Vista than it did with XP pro. GASP!

I have several pcs in my office all running Win XP with little or no issues. It's not just Premiere Pro that I use Stiicky, I have older apps that I rely on like Cleaner XL 1.5 and some smallish programs too that I have no idea if they would migrate to Vista successfully. If for no other reason than wanting to avoid putting myself through the hassle, the only compelling reason to upgrade my four main pcs to Vista is if a new version of a major software app like Premiere Pro comes out that needs Vista or works better with it. Other than, I figure better is the enemy of good enough since i have everything working right for HDV editing and encoding.

I'm a diehard Mac user who still uses Vista and has not ever had a single issue. My girlfriend manages a training center on at an Ivy League university and installs Vista on Mac machines day in and day out. She too has never had a single issue with Vista.
I'm pretty much convinced that people who lay the hate on Vista are either spouting off info they heard or read elsewhere and haven't had much real interaction with Vista. |

And if you do not need the power of pro, Premiere Elements can do everything you are talking about for a lot less $...

I'm on Vista ultimate 64bit on all machines now, and given proper hardware, setup, and plenty of memory you can't beat editing and dumping with Premiere and After Effects. The workflow is amazing once you get it down. I've eliminated most of my outside software besides VideoCharge on occassion for small quick jobs.
If you need simple, they've got it covered, if you want to tweak every details it's all there. Adobe Suite Vote +1, though if you can wait, you might want to hold off for the new CS4 release... I'm hearing great things.

Thanks Jim, I will take you up on that someday! And thank you to everyone else for all of your suggestions and comments, it's very appreciated. I think I will check out premiere and see what I think.
