Are you ashamed to be American?

I know I make it a point to not let anyone know I am American when traveling to Europe...

Years back I would be proud to have everyone know I was from America.

America is going down and the people aren't doing jack about it.

It's just like in Nazi Germany when, after WWII, reporters asked the citizens if they knew about where their Jewish neighbours went, to which they replied, "We thought they moved."

Ignorance is bliss for Americans.

Magician's Choice - the magician will ask a spectator to make an apparently free choice among several items. No matter what choices the spectator makes, the magician ends up with the item which he wanted the spectator to choose.

For the political purpose substitute "Magician" for "Banker" and "items" for "Presidents"

I was in Europe four times this last year and whenever someone would ask me where I was from the first question from their mouths would be "What is wrong with your government?" The tone in general about Americans has changed especially in Europe. I can't blame them. I personally believe our government has acted like bullies in foreign relations and with our Dollar getting weaker, foreigners have less need to tolerate us.

I dont own a shirt with an american flag on it so no. If people asked where i was from though i would tell them the USA. If they judge me because of what our current leadership has done thats pretty narrow minded.

It's sad to see that American's are putting up with all this BS.

I agree. If people judge you after simply asking, "Where are you from", then that is narrow minded. But if people ask, Are you proud of being an American?", and you say, "Yes", then I agree with people judging that statement.

I travelled the Europe back in a day - spent 4 months of each of my 5 university years crossing it back and forth - which was few years before GW was elected and even back then every American was acting like a jack ass and everyone hated them. I don't know what it's like now, but 10 years ago it was Americans themselves, not their government who were full of shit and no one could stand them.

Just because I am proud to be an american doesnt mean I have to be happy with the current administration. Pride in ones country doesnt have to directly relate to current political leaders and their agendas. I think our government is fucked and is giving americans a bad name, its sad.

i live in europe and travel all over the freakin place, i have never, nor will i ever, say that i am any nationality but america. strange part is, i have two citizenships, i could claim the other one but choose not to. i was born and raised in america and thats the country i identify with.

if your afraid to state your American, turn your passport into your government, disclaim your citizenship, get the fuck out of the country and never come back. PERIOD!

As an American you are more privileged then at least 95% of the rest of the world. Realize this, don't hide from it.

I am proud to be an American. Ours is a great country.

I don't put much stock in the people criticizing our President --on GFY most are foreigners, and stateside most are people with partisan objectives.

In the case of US politicians and people who use the war as a wedge issue to get Dems elected at the expense of our troops and our national security, I don't think it's unfair to call them traitors.

Frankly, the countries where I would be afraid to identify my nationality are places where I simply would not travel. I am amazed at the risky places Americans go. If the state department says it is very risky, I absolutely wouldn't go. Any deemed moderately risky, I STILL wouldn't go.

Canada, UK, Bermuda, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Portugal, Iceland, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Norway, and maybe a handful of other countries --those places I wouldn't hesitate. France and Greece, maybe.

All other countries I would at least research further before travelling.

Places I probably wouldn't go: Spain, Mexico, Russia, Jamaica, etc..

Venezuela? No fucking way.

English folks should feel sorry for their fellow countrymen when travelling. They tend to be dumb, fat, noisy, rude, bring their accent from Manchester, and many pedos.

American travellers are more ok because they tend to be educated, upper class. The average redneck from Louisiana won't make it to New York, let alone Europe or South America.

<<< Proud American

Every country has something to be ashamed of but that doesn't mean an individual shouldn't proud of where they came from. Contrary to popular belief one bad apple (or even a few) does not spoil the whole bunch.

Authors such as the Holocaust expert David Cesarani have argued that the government and policies of the United States of America against certain indigenous peoples constituted genocide. David Cesarani states that "in terms of the sheer numbers killed, the Native American Genocide exceeds that of the Holocaust".

Basically if you are American and come over here as long as you don't act arrogant and be a jackass you will be accepted, cause i have seen alot of yanks come over here acting like they are gods gift and then having their teeth kicked out

and in my opinion the most hostile country to americans in europe is probally france and then ovbiously the balkans for ovbious reasons.

But yeah as long as you are not a class A retard then you don't have anything to worry about.

I'm not ashamed to be an american. I'm embarrassed about some of the things that have gone on in politics the last few years. But you don't throw the baby out with the bath water. Bill Maher had it right, if all the smart people move out then who is left to fix things?

I am American and I'm not very proud of our government, but I'll say this. Whenever some country has a dictator exploiting their people, who's the first country they look to for help? And all these other countries who are supposed to be so much better off now still what and see what we're going to do before they lift a fucking finger to do anything.

We could have done without this Iraq thing and without voting actors and low iq rich boys into office, but we still have the one up on most countries. There's a couple others I wouldn't mind moving to to at least check out, but not too many and not the ones you'd expect.

Basically everybody uses everybody for their own goals and it's always been that way (i've been watching a lot of the history channel lately ), but American seems to take the heat for all the evil bullshit that happens in the world.

Try living in Africa and having the women in your family raped or your arms and legs chopped off with machetes and you will probably be able to handle living in America a little easier

Why would anyone be ashamed with the label placed on you for where you reside inside some imaginary lines drawn in the land? Would you be ashamed of your race, gender, or other charecteristics you had no control over?

Nationalism is for sheep. It's used by the poweful to control people and influence them. It is used to create dissent amongst people on both sides. You should never be ashamed of some erroneous tag placed on you, you should be proud and ashamed at individual people.
