I have often thought about this. To set up a traditional radio station you need a license, to set up an online one you dont. The same goes for TV stations.

I can seriously see one day governments stepping in to get some extra cash and say that running a web site you are broadcasting, you need a license, cough up.

Does anyone else think this could happen or am I just a paranoid wanker?

I know a loads of people that run radio stations and they dont pay shit to anyone.

I do not think that is very probable as the internet is essentially a massive collective of privately owned and publicly traded enterprises all over the world.

Whatever happens, something will be done so that the little guy can't compete with the likes of WalMart.com so easily. Just look at eBay alone. How many BILLIONS of dollars in lost revenue has that site cost retailers?

Where is the proof of that loss?

*Buyers that bought on ebay may have never bought any other way.
*Bidders who lost may have wanted it so bad that they decided to buy retail
and have good service if a problem occured.

Unless a bill is passed (which it will never) to heavily restrict, censor and monitor internet sites using the FCC, I don't think it's possible. First they have to break the barrier of the FCC overseeing satelite radio and cable tv...and that fight has been going on for thirty years (the cable one anyway).

You don't need a license to publish a newspaper. You don't need a license to run a community newsletter.

There is no reason that anything on the internet would require a "license".
