Interesting stats about Yahoo
According to recent earnings reports, Yahoo is making about $64 Million a month in revenues.
Also, Media Metrix reports that Yahoo is currently getting about 79 million unique visitors a month. So, if you divide $64 Million by 79 million uniques, you get $0.81 per unique visitor. I can't figure out how Yahoo manages to earn $0.81 for every unique visitor when the majority of their revenues come from selling advertising.

Adult Sites - $600.00
Regular Sites - $299.00 Free Submission is still an option, but you have to jump through hoops, and you will likely not be listed for 3-6 months due to the number of submissions they get. |

I have a regular mainstream site that I submitted to Yahoo last month.
I didn't pay anything, I just did the regular submit. It was listed on Yahoo 10 days later.

Because yahoo offers so many different things to its customers.
E-mail, games, chat, personals, IM, webcam, profiles, member search, email search, and the list goes on & on. The user ends up spending 4 hours on the site, rather than 20 seconds to bust a nut. |

yahoo also has lots and lots of pay services now, too many to list. all of their decent features people grew to depend on (like pop mail) now cost you. you even have to pay to compete in the ladder systems on yahoo games. i don't think the logic you're employing is correct, they're probably not making much with unique users but with people who've been using them regularly for 3-4 years who didn't want to give up the services that went pay in the last year or so. but they also do have the advantage of being one of the first websites someone new to the internet is most likely to go to, so at that point ads and 'win a free car' circle jerks might work.
